About GALAK-Z

✦ AI summary

Pilot an anime-inspired spacecraft through procedurally generated deep-space arenas, blasting intelligent enemies with skill-based combat that demands both firepower and outsmarting. GALAK-Z fuses classic 16-bit shooter vibes with next-gen AI and physics, offering multiple modes from roguelike permadeath challenges to Arcade checkpoints and endless Void gameplay with worldwide leaderboards.

Brand New features!! The Void DLC offers endless gameplay, Online Leaderboards, and a Daily Challenge that allows players to compete worldwide for the top score.

Prepare for the bar to be raised on deep-space 2D dog-fighting! GALAK-Z is a modern, A.I. and physics-driven open-world action game, viewed through the lens of the classic 16-bit space shooter. Powered by the next-generation Cyntient AI platform, GALAK-Z puts players in control of anime-inspired spacecraft inhabiting procedurally generated worlds.

In GALAK-Z both stealth and skill are required to defeat truly intelligent enemies. You will be forced to outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots! Master your ship’s sublimely-honed controls as you blast enemies, unleash missile salvos, and even toss your opponents, mech-style, to their explosive demise.

Recently added, Arcade Mode lets you replay failed missions any number of times without losing all of your saved progress. Rogue Mode retains GALAK-Z’s original white-knuckle roguelike challenge that harkens back to the 16-bit era of gaming. Rogue mode will always be available if and when you’re looking to test your skill and bravery by putting everything on the line, every mission.

Players will be forced to outmaneuver, outgun and outsmart enemies that think, react and cooperate like seasoned pilots. Both stealth and skill are required to defeat enemy squads in a brutal game of cat and mouse. Prepare for an enemy that comes alive like never before!

Really fun rogue-like top down space shooter with visuals inspired by 80's anime like Robotech. Combat feels so cool and satisfying because although it looks like an arcade shooter there's actually a big tactical edge where you have to retreat to recharge your shields and use the environment against your enemies to take their shields down and then move in to finish them off. It nails making you feel overwhelmed but empowered at the same time. The campaign is split up into "Seasons" like it's a TV show where you start each season with the default ship and then upgrade it as you progress with new weapons, boost upgrades and other stuff like elemental shots which freeze or set enemy ships on fire. Everything has so much character from the synth music to the Saturday morning cartoon style voice acting and the way enemies insult you over the radio and scream when they explode. Good stuff.

Getting 100% was a mixed bag of decent gameplay but an achievement gamble. approximate amount of time to 100%: 15-25hours ~ (skill dependent) Estimated achievement difficulty: 7/10 Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 2+ Multiplayer achievements: No. Missable achievements: Yes !!! (Limited stage replay available*) Grinding Achievements: No*. DLC-Only achievements: No. Time-gated achievements: No. Speed-run achievements: Yes !!! (Rescue the Admiral in 3 minutes). RNG-achievements: No*. Does difficulty affect achievements: Yes!! Need to complete the entire game on rogue mode. Unobtainable/glitched achievements: YES !!!*. Point of no return: No. First achievement unlock: Finish the tutorial (along with Stealth Extraction). Is there a good guide: The steam guide by Brother STX is excellent. His patched DLL still works. Notes: * The game is made up of 4 chapter with 5 missions each. While you can re-play each chapter there's no way to select which mission to play. You will have to start from scratch and play them all * You can always play in rogue mode as long as you quit to desktop and backup your save after every mission. * No real grind, the 500 kills will be easily gotten while…

This game is way too difficult. I don't mind difficult games but this is insanely punishing and ramps up so fast it isn't fun at all.

Its art style is pretty unique and its fun plus a free DLC.

A top-notch art style and an "Asteroids by way of Macross" premise can't quite shake the fact that this game shouldn't have been a roguelite. Especially since, by all accounts, it meant that the game effectively has no ending.

Why didn't we ever get some proper sequels to this little gem? I loved the graphics, the sounds, the goofy voice acting..all of it. Most of all it was overall just a great little twin stick shooter that I could just pick up and play. I think I still have the vinyl record that I got in a mystery box once upon time some where around here. 17-bit, if you're still reading reviews or care about this IP please make a new Galak-Z!
