About Space Pirates and Zombies

✦ AI summary

Command a fleet of customizable ships in real-time tactical space combat against zombie infestations and rival factions across a procedurally generated galaxy. Manage strategy and action simultaneously with physics-based dogfights, RPG-style tech trees, and persistent progression as you research new vessels and upgrade your ever-evolving armada.

At its core, Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, skill oriented, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions. But as you dig deeper, SPAZ becomes much more.
Instead of flying a single ship, you are in charge of an ever growing and evolving fleet, unlocking the rich tactical elements of SPAZ, all accessed at the touch of a button. Issue orders, change ships, apply fleet AI settings, all on the fly. At any moment the battle can change, and the Tactics Panel gives you the tools to make the battle turn in your favor.
As a layer on top of the action and tactics, we have a detailed technology and levelup system akin to what you would expect from an RPG. Learn to build new ships by destroying your enemies. Explore the galaxy to find components, use your hard earned research points to unlock their potential, and then customize every aspect of your new fleet.
Finally, there is the universe in which all this strife and adventure takes place. SPAZ features a persistent randomly generated Galaxy populated with story elements, factions, enemies, missions, items, to provide you with a unique experience each time you play. While you are struggling to survive, uncover the secret of an ever expanding Zombie infestation that spreads by establishing its own real time multi-tiered ecosystem.

Key features:

  • 33 ships to research, build, outfit and pilot.
  • 70 unique components to discover and customize your fleet’s performance.
  • Totally physics based combat system.
  • Fight Zombie infestations, battling a full zombie ecosystem comprising four stages of un-life.
  • Explore a persistent randomly generated galaxy containing hundreds of star systems.
  • Freedom to explore the galaxy and take on challenges at your own pace.
  • Aid, flee, or exploit the warring factions in each star system.
  • The unique event system lets the player change the balance of power in any star system
  • Carefully spend your hard earned research points on hundreds of upgrades across 15 categories.

INTRODUCTION i wish there was a "meh" option and i should give this game a negative review but because the game is so old and was created by two people and is still a better option then a lot of new games made by bigger studios I'll give this a thumbs up. i started playing this back in high school and beat most of the game and then left it alone until recently where I beat this in the last couple of days. What I realized is that this is basically a Ubisoft-style game. This is because it basically takes some really cool ideas you won't find anywhere else and then throws them into a grind-fest where if someone was fun once you have to do it 100 times to the point where it is no longer fun. That's probably my biggest issue with this game: it is so unreasonably grindy. You need to keep your resources topped up to keep making progress in the campaign and it takes so long to collect resources that it just gets annoying. And then on top of that you'll keep getting events where your mothership will get attacked and you just have to sit through that and it takes a while. On the one hand I like the challenge of your main base being attacked but on the other hand there's a point in the game…

The horrible controls ruined this for me to the point I just removed it from my account.

Having played a LOT of Starsector over the years, this just isn't anywhere near as good as that game. It's very outdated (yes, I know it's old, I'm not daft), doesn't look good at all on larger screens, the controls are both twitchy and sluggish at the same time (quite a feat, to be fair), the story and dialogue are equal parts awful and it didn't take long for me to stop playing and lose interest. I'd rather play Starsector. That's an incredible game, with a vibrant and helpful modding community. It looks fantastic on a 50in 4K TV, with no faffing needed to sort out resolutions. It's constantly being worked on and updated, improved and more content added. Considering what I've read about SPAZ2 being abandoned, I think I'll skip trying that one and not bother.

Works still with Win 10. No bugs seen. Should run on a toaster. Mods are in the Community Hub Diskussion as the website was nuked.
