Galaxy Tales: Story of Rapunzel

Have you ever encountered a game and felt quite surprised after knowing how under the radar it flew among gaming communities? That's me with this one. Indeed, Galaxy Tales: Story of Rapunzel is a cartoonishly looking action platformer with smooth gameplay revolving around side scrolling 2D platforming as well as dealing with enemies and bosses. As one might have guessed from the famous character's name, you can hair whip enemies as well as have plenty of movement options through double jumping, air dashing and more. While I personally recommend the controller for this setup, both options should work fine enough for the required challenges. Outside of the mechanics, what sets this game apart from others is certainly the presentation. Probably inspired by the bubbly style of series such as Steven Universe or Star vs the Forces of Evil, the game features lots of color and expressive sprites from our main character. In fact, Rapunzel's goofy and exciting attitude certainly fits the bill as well with some of her deliveries and actions. The world and concept are interesting and the first few levels are decently fun however, the last 2 bosses have gimmicks that make them more frustrating to fight than actually challenging. I also have to fight my computer to get it to register my xbox one controller every time I start the game, and a few instances where it would stop registering it mid levels. I wouldn't necessarily call it a bad game, But I can see a lot of players feeling frustrated especially near the end

A cute platformer with simple mechanics: double jump, dash with invincibility frames, and most of all grabbing enemies and launch points with the hair. Additional mechanics like teleporters are introduced gradually in the game; I found the switch puzzles annoying for how they break the flow, but they are thankfully limited to a single world. That mechanic is however used greatly with the second-to-last boss, where parallel to the main character you have to control an avatar on a screen in the background. Possibly my favourite part of the game, as I found the last boss annoying instead. While very Flash-like, the graphics are cute and quite colorful. The protagonist of course stands out, looking like a cross between Star Butterfly and Shantae. The story and cutscenes are really secondary, but occasionally her naivety is endearing. With a few hours to complete the 7 worlds, it's another game developed and/or published by Ikinagames that doesn't reinvent the wheel but ensures some good, simple fun.

This game is overall good. Good, music, art style, pretty much everything. One nitpick I have is that I wish there was a way to start a new save file or have multiple save files.

It's a great game, harder than the animation makes it look, Strongly recommended.

Well... this game was surprisingly very nice. For a while, Galaxy Tales: Story of Rapunzel was just another game in my Steam backlog. I thought it looked good and snatched it on sale when it got out of early access, but never got around to playing it. Now that I have played it though, I cannot believe how good it is. Just like another reviewer on the game's store page, I also believe this game to be a mixture of Shantae and Mighty Switch Force, only with speedrun-esque features thrown in it. Galaxy Tales is mostly a puzzle platformer, with heavy emphasis on traversing through platforming hazards rather than fighting with enemies. In fact, it is very much encouraged to avoid unnecessary combat and focus on getting to the next checkpoint; unless for when you get to a bossfight of course. While the game is fun, I do believe the basic gameplay principles get a bit repetitive if you play the game for long periods of time, especially since the game really overuses some mechanics. While Galaxy Tales keeps adding new hazards and enemies to keep the experience fresh through its 4~5 hour story mode, there's no denying that the main thing you're supposed to do stays the same: solve some puzz…
