God of Chaos

A decent quick standalone. 7/10. Only because the romance was shallow and lazy. Addison and Zinnia had mostly the same copy paste dialogue/interactions.

Simple, but [u]good[/u] simple. It's a quick dive into a good story, not a drag into 4-book deep lore epic. Characters are well crafted for their purpose in the story, with none of them being overbearing or stealing central role that's established to belong to the player (literal GOD of chaos). Decisions matter, again, in simple, almost direct, way. Choosing one plan closes off others, then stories merge at further point. Story pacing is well adapted to it's lenght, meaning it's fast ("fast, not "rushed" mind you) . Things happen and jump from point A to B and so on with almost every choice you pick. And a part I personally appriciate very much in this type of games, you CAN fail, meaning there are consequences to, for example, trying to push through certain sitiuations with skills you're not profficient with. That said, you can replay every chapter before starting next one, so it's "forgiving". You have to really want to see bad end to reach it. The game knows what it is and doesn't try to pretend it's more. It's not "Infinity" series multi part story, it's not "I, the Forgotten One" slow and strategic approach. An engaging, fast-paced, character-driven narrative with decisions that can make or break the world. It was relatively short but unlike some other interactive fiction I've read, the fast pace felt fittingly lean rather than rushed (it COULD be longer but it didn't NEED to be to tell the story). Side note: something I LOVED that I feel is desperately missing from other interactive fiction from COG is the option to replay the chapter at the end of each chapter! Although my preference would be a save option, I think this was a REALLY great alternative that I used quite liberally to experience more of the choices than I would have if it had forced me to lock into one.

Certainly one of the better recent CoG releases. Excellent premise, plenty of fun moments that really embrace the trickster god feel (big, powerful, chaotic moments), and quite well done on a technical level, with good pacing, a plot that works well together, and an easy-to-read style. It does lack depth though, with characters feeling flat, the choices a bit repetitive, and the game just overall lacking emotional potency. It was fun for a playthrough but fairly forgettable.
