About Gridworld

✦ AI summary

Watch virtual creatures evolve and adapt in real-time as they compete to survive, eat, reproduce, and pass on their genes through a neural network-based DNA system. Start with random chaos or jump into guided scenarios, then sit back and observe emergent behaviors like predation, symbiosis, and speciation unfold in hours instead of millennia—or use world editing tools to actively shape their evolutionary destiny.

Gridworld is an artificial life and evolution simulator. It simulates a 2D, grid-based ecosystem where virtual creatures struggle to survive, adapt, and evolve through natural selection. Watch them learn to find food, avoid danger, and compete to survive. Let them thrive on their own, or step in with world editing tools and scenarios to shape their fate.

Creatures

Creatures appear as colored tiles with tiny subcells that represent neurons. You can see them move around, eating food to stay alive and eventually reproduce if they are successful enough. Each has a body and a neural network brain encoded in DNA.
  • Input neurons sense the environment.
  • Signals pass through the neural network.
  • Output neurons trigger behaviors such as moving, rotating, reproducing, eating, or attacking.

The Primordial Soup

You begin with a world full of food and randomly generated creatures. Most cannot feed or reproduce, and their genes die with them. Eventually, one random DNA combination succeeds, resulting in a creature that can eat and reproduce. It multiplies rapidly, sparking a population explosion and the start of evolution.

Genesis

Don’t have the patience to wait?No problem, several scenarios with simple premade creatures are available. These let evolution start immediately so you can focus on watching adaptation and natural selection unfold rather than waiting for the first self-replicating creature to appear.

Evolution in Action

When creatures reproduce, DNA may mutate.
  • Some mutations are beneficial, improving survival.
  • Others are harmful or neutral.
  • Successful mutations spread, unsuccessful ones die out.
This ongoing cycle of mutation and selection drives adaptation.Because creatures live fast, you can observe evolution over hours or days, instead of thousands of years.

Your Role

Evolution happens automatically, you don’t need to guide it.Start a simulation, let it run, and check back later to see what has emerged.Want more control?
  • Use the world editor to create new challenges.
  • Adjust simulation settings to change environmental conditions.
  • Intervene during simulations to see how populations react and force them to overcome new challenges.

What You Might Observe

Over time, many natural phenomena can emerge:

Behavior and Adaptation

  • Development of food-finding skills
  • Emergence of danger-avoidance behaviors
  • Predatory ambush tactics
  • Coevolutionary arms races
  • Temporary multicellular clusters, where creatures combine into larger forms to hunt prey

Population Dynamics

  • Population booms and busts
  • Predator–prey population splits
  • Speciation, as populations split into distinct species adapted to different niches
  • Viruses and parasites replicating by exploiting other creatures
  • Viral outbreaks that can wipe out large parts of the population
Every simulation is unique. Start your own world, watch evolution unfold, and discover what forms of life will emerge in Gridworld.

One of THE evolutional simulators! This simulation consists of cell sized creatures in a gird, so it is focused on behavioral and "stat" evolution throu a system of neurons (ie. eating neuron, moving neuron, neuron neuron [for more thinking]). Its a bit hard to understand what each neuron does, I personaly have not found documentation for this, but it is mostly intutitive. You can get a lot of fun behaviours and you can really tweak the simulation to great detail. I find the gravity setting to be fun to turn on sometimes, to see all the carcases fall down :3. I hope to see a multicelular species evolve sometime, Hopefully I will be able to see one this patch. I recommend to anyone who likes evolution, ants and little creatures. And unlike Bibites or some other sims this simulation can run more creatures at the same time, thanks to its more primitive physics system (or maybe there is some other reason) so even a potato can probably get some fun creatures out of this. Recommend with a full hearth! [>]w[<]

Gridworld, developed and published by DopplerFrog, is a distinctive simulation game that explores the mechanics of artificial life and evolution within a 2D, grid-based environment. The game immerses players in a digital ecosystem where virtual creatures struggle to survive, adapt, and evolve over time. Released in late 2015, Gridworld has earned a reputation for its innovative approach to simulating life, combining simple mechanics with emergent complexity to create a sandbox that both entertains and educates about the principles of natural selection. At the core of Gridworld is its simulation of autonomous creatures, each represented by colored tiles composed of subcells that function as neurons. These neural networks dictate the behavior of each creature, processing environmental inputs and triggering actions such as movement, rotation, eating, attacking, and reproducing. This system allows for the emergence of complex, often unpredictable behaviors from relatively simple rules, giving players the chance to observe evolutionary processes unfold in real time. As creatures interact with one another and the environment, traits that enhance survival are naturally selected, creating…

Best evolution simulator on steam, nothing else comes close. It is not really a game per say, but it is a ton of fun watching your little creatures become better adapted to their biomes. They start off as creatures that can do nothing but move in a straight line to creatures that spot and seek out food while avoiding dangers. The ui interface lets you do so much, but as a consequence it is also a bit of a slog to learn. Worth the slog though

If you are at all into life simulators, this is an exceptional addition to that genre. The creature design is a little complicated at first but once you understand it it produces some fantastic results and can create some wonderfully interesting evolutionary paths. The terrain system likewise is light-weight but detailed enough for any experiment you wish to run. You can set different ground types to grow different combinations of food, whether they cause damage, whether they hinder movement, whether you can move across it with land or aquatic movement (or even different ranges of each if you wanted to create a swampy area or something of that nature). While it is not something that can be played like a typical game, keeping a notebook nearby and recording a journal of your world and creatures can really satisfy that "Darwin on the Beagle" feeling that I'm always looking for.
