About Guards II: Chaos in Hell

Guards II is a tactical turn-based strategy game with seemingly simple rules but deep and thoughtful mechanics. To attack, you only need to swap two heroes — but don’t be fooled, as the devil is in the details: every decision can determine the outcome of the battle. You’ve made a deal with a demon and now venture into the very heart of Hell. Traverse five otherworldly realms filled with terrifying creatures. Eight heroes, each with their unique abilities, will help you break through countless hordes and establish order in a world of chaos. What Awaits You in Guards II: Chaos in Hell?
  • An original turn-based combat system — think ahead and exploit enemy weaknesses.
  • Eight unique heroes — upgrade their abilities and create the perfect squad.
  • A flexible skill system — combine upgrades and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Five realms of Hell — each with its own horrors and deadly creatures.
  • 80 thrilling levels — from simple skirmishes to true challenges.
  • Hell Mode — 80 more levels of nightmare with new enemies and increased difficulty.

SIMPLE RULES, DEEP STRATEGY

You control a squad of four heroes, each with their own characteristics:
  • Attack Type — Physical, Fire, Magic, or Deadly.
  • Resistance — each hero has a defense against a specific type of damage and a weakness to others.
  • Attack Methods — normal strikes, powerful super abilities, and two stances.
Each turn requires just one action — swap two heroes. But behind this simple mechanic lies complex tactical depth:
  • Hero Rearrangement — three heroes on the front line attack while the fourth in the back recovers health.
  • Ultimate Abilities — when a hero comes from the back line, they unleash a powerful ability to crush the enemy.
  • Tactical Combinations — select your squad and alternate attacks to exploit enemy weaknesses.
Each hero wields two combat stances, changing their playstyle. For example:
  • Wizard — in his normal form, uses magic orbs for attacks, and his super ability enhances his power.
  • Fire Wizard — when switched, can attack any enemy with fire, and his super ability summons three meteors to incinerate foes on every line!
Utilize different stances, combine abilities, and choose the right tactics to achieve victory over the forces of darkness.

DEVELOP HEROES, CHANGE TACTICS

Each hero has a unique upgrade tree with over 30 possibilities. Decide which skills to prioritize and create your ideal strategy!
  • Customize your playstyle — enhance attack, defense, or unique hero abilities.
  • Choose a development path — experiment with different builds to adapt to enemies.
Demonic essence — defeat enemies and earn temporary boosts before the next battle. Use them wisely to prepare for the toughest challenges.Extended skill system that enhances tactical possibilities and allows for a personalized playstyle. Change stances once per turn, boost resistances with the Spirit Helper, or unlock new tactical options.

JOURNEY THROUGH LEGENDS AND NIGHTMARES

The worlds of Guards II: Chaos in Hell are inspired by dark myths and legends from cultures around the globe. You will traverse five unique circles of Hell, each presenting a new challenge:
  • Egyptian Hell — Deserts filled with reanimated mummies, venomous scorpions, and snakes.
  • Japanese Hell — Malevolent yokai and other vengeful spirits thirsting for revenge.
  • Scandinavian Hell — A frozen wasteland where northern spirits and an army of dead warriors follow closely behind.
  • Slavic Forest — An enchanted thicket with animated tree stumps, leshys, and the infamous Baba Yaga, flying in her mortar.
  • Classic Hell — Where the approaches to the Devil’s throne are guarded by demons and fiends.
Dive into this grim world, explore mythological horrors, and prove that even Hell itself can be conquered!

This game seemed rather simple the first half hour and I admit I was doubting my purchase but boy I'm happy I stuck with it as the strategic complexity becomes deep and truly EXcellent right after that hour mark and kept on giving! it's a really fun and interresting strategy puzzle^^ read some other positive review why the systems are so good sicne I'm too busy playing this game to bother doing so^^

Simple mechanic, but surprisingly tactical and definitely not easy (on hard). Hero selection, hero upgrades, general upgrades and item selection all provide a lot of decision making room, and that's even before the battle. My only gripe is that the last level has a significant difficulty spike compared to the rest of the game on the same difficulty. Still, the last battle was pretty cool and the entire game satisfyingly. However, there is a sort of New game+ mode that introduces new enemies, so there is quite a bit of content even after the game ends.

Guards II: Chaos in Hell is a tactical strategy game that manages to create impressive depth from a very simple foundation. Developed by Battlecruiser Games and published by HeroCraft PC, the game sends players into the depths of Hell to battle demonic forces using a compact squad of heroes and a combat system built entirely around positioning and timing. At first glance, the mechanics appear almost too minimalistic, but after only a few battles it becomes clear that the simplicity is intentional. Every movement, attack, and formation change carries weight, turning each encounter into a strategic puzzle where smart planning matters far more than brute force. The story serves primarily as a setup for the tactical gameplay, but it fits the dark fantasy atmosphere well enough. A magician enters into a dangerous pact in order to stop the Devil from uniting Hell’s kingdoms and launching an invasion against humanity. Players lead a team of warriors, mages, and strange supernatural fighters through multiple infernal regions inspired by mythology and folklore. While the narrative itself is fairly straightforward, the setting gives the game enough personality to remain engaging throughout …

I enjoyed this game for a few hours and would recommend it to someone who wants a casual, retro-inspired puzzle game. At the same time, the mechanic of rotating the heroes got stale after awhile, and it just didn't hold my attention for very long. If I reflect on why it got stale, it was generally because there was no way to "get ahead" with planning or tactics. This was really more of a puzzle game where you had to get the right combination of heroes to pass through the levels and challenges. Additionally, you often couldn't survive the levels unless you complete the challenges and unlock level ups. It became a combination of grind to get unlocks plus trial and error to find the hero combination that works. I don't like grindy games, and I don't like puzzle games, so it just didn't draw me in. Again, nothing wrong with the game. Design is good, art is good, music and F/X are good. I was just hoping for more tactics and less grind plus puzzle. If you enjoy those, then you will be happy with the game.

First boss is vastly too difficult. Game is worthless at this point to me, 35 minutes in and I am done. Very peeved about this purchase.
