Hermitage: Strange Case Files (2021)

[h1] Cattrific Body Swap and Solved Mystery! [/h1] I am not much of a reader of Lovecraft works but this VN has a certain cosmic twist to it. I bought it thinking this is a sort of paranormal detective ghost hunting type of story, but nope I encountered an amazing group of members who found each other and interesting entities. Being someone who has not read a single Lovecraft book I was a bit confused on what is happening and I feel the story is not direct. It might take a lot of thinking to comprehend the story properly. [b] Story: smooth confusion [/b] I played the VN twice, first time to experience it. Second time to get the achievements. It was progressing smoothly throughout the first 1-3 chapters with the 4th one I couldn't comprehend much what is going on. This a story that starts mysteriously and ends mysteriously. You have the store manager his name is just that. And the real owner of the store called "the deliverer" The store manager is a scholar hiding after a mysterious incident which happened in a supernatural origin. I've finished this and only ever only noticed 1 bug - on ch 4 [spoiler] during exploration if you save before you choose, the bg bugs out and goes back to hermitage essentially erasing the map. [/spoiler] Nothing a save and re-load doesn't fix though. Typos and errors are minor and can be glossed over. The controls are ♥♥♥♥ on deck though, had to use mouse/keyboard because controller set up doesn't do it's job. For the story, 🥰 chapter 1 but I disassociated somewhere between ch 3-4. Chapter 5, my mind is just floating in the void. I liked a bit of chapter 6 but the convo is so—I don't know, sounds like a monologue to me. That's what it sounds like when you talk to yourself LOL I can't see any personality in the dialogues, it's all so monotonous. I could use a joke or two. BUT ok so, while it seems I have a lot of issues LOL I overall liked it, maybe give it a 3/5 rating. I'm replaying it on skip now because stupid me abused the 'Thought' button even though I didn't read what it says and now I missed one achievement 🥶

Very absorbing game! Each new customer that comes in the store brings a very different and interesting supernatural situation with them. My favorite part of the game was the book shelf: going through the books and gaining their knowledge really raises the level of anticipation and dread for the creature you're going to face. The last two chapters weren't my favorite (they felt a bit confusing and thrown together, and there were relevant books in my possession that never came into play which bugs me), but overall I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you like supernatural and detective games. It was a nice hats off to Lovecraft.

Other than a few typos and a sadly linear last 1/3 of the game, it's a good set of mysteries with deductions to be made along the way.

I enjoy the stories so far (i am in chapter 4). I also enjoy the artwork of the scenes, such as the design of the buildings, and the colours. I enjoy the characters overall in terms of the curious situations that put them together however they remain relatively 2 dimensional and mostly just tools to drive the story. Which is fine by me in a story / game like this. But it certainly would be a bonus if the characters felt more than the few static poses used to express them. I see the potential for a great series that I would likely follow. The stories are elaborated well by interesting pseudo history (or at least I hope its all invented) and creates its own unique world with Lovecraftian references. However, after Chapter 1, I found the stories a little over-written. It tired me to read through so much dialogue in one scene. The first chapter was a good length for me. It kept me interested and I was satisfied with the pacing and the ending. After this though, I found myself skipping whole scenes and I feel bad about that because I probably missed some great writing but will likely never go back to find out.
