Jiangshi x Daoshi is one of the stranger visual novels I have played because it feels much closer to watching an animated action series than reading a normal visual novel. I follow Luan, a former assassin who gets attacked by man eating creatures before being saved by a wandering Dao priest called Ling Ling. From there the story brings in vampires, assassins, immortals and all sorts of Chinese supernatural ideas. I really like how quickly it gets into the madness. It does not spend ages building up a normal fantasy world before things start exploding. The animation is easily the best thing about it for me. The characters are constantly moving, fighting, reacting and changing expression, and some of the action scenes are surprisingly over the top. There are huge explosions, sword fights, transformations and ridiculous attacks that would look completely out of place in a normal visual novel. I like the fact that the game is not afraid to look silly either. It can go from a serious conversation to someone getting blasted through a mountain without much warning, and somehow that works with the tone. The characters are another reason I kept going.
