About Jon Shafer's At the Gates
At the Gates is a 4X grand strategy game from Jon Shafer, designer of Civilization 5.
You are a Dark Age lord. Your destiny is to build a kingdom in the shadow of the crumbling Roman Empire. Explore the dangerous landscape around you, harvest its resources, and build a mighty economic and military machine. Your clans have their own personalities and desires, so carefully consider how you use them.
It won't be easy. Your path is unsure. Overcome your immensely strong neighbors. Outlast the frigid winters of the far north to discover a source of gold and vast riches.
Are you the leader who will usher in a new era of European history? Or will you be forgotten?
Seasons and weather dramatically transform the landscape around you. The river that once served as a barrier in the summer might become a highway in the winter - for both you and your enemies!
Each of your clans has unique traits and desires, so choose carefully how you use them.
Keep your clans fed through the harsh winter. Resources run out so always be hunting for more. Your neighbors can be immensely strong. Every game poses new challenges and opportunities.
A beautiful watercolor landscape serves as the canvas for your clever economic and military strategies.
AtG features a revolutionary user interface which utilizes "tooltips-in-tooltips" for the very first time, making it far easier to learn without sacrificing any gameplay depth.

Abandoned the game after making so many promises, and stating in a podcast that they 'may' return to this, while also still trying to charge full price for it. Absolute garbage behaviour, do NOT buy this or any other future games by the developer, do not allow this to become any sort of standard.13 found this helpful
Baaahahahaha. Why can you still buy this? For $30?6 found this helpful
Hasn't been and will never be finished, don't buy.1 found this helpful
Game was abandoned a couple of months after releasing a very unpolished and buggy version. Shameful behavior.
I expected a lot more from this game, considering its creator, but despite looking unfinished and suffering from balance problems, it's very pretty and has interesting mechanics. If you catch a big promotion, it's worth it.
I really like this game but that's in spite of its many flaws. I've had fun with it but I don't think most people will. it feels more like a puzzle game then a 4x. the difficulty is a joke but the harder ones work if you play with self enforced rules to avoid broken or simple solutions. if you do get this game, try playing as a vegan ludite that hates trade. diplomacy is a mixed and leaking bag. both romes will just declare war on me for no reason even if i manage to get them at a high rep and stay far away. being at war doesn't game over you. they mostly just smash your things and it takes some resources and 2 turns to repair. most tribes don't attack me and they're much easier to deal with. i usually just piss a few off to get +5 global rep for being a bad ass and the rest will turn 1 ally with you after that. I've had fun with this game but it's not worth more then 5 dollars imo (edit just double checked the current price its 29.99 lmao this game is broken and hasn't been updated in 4 years) . dead game too so is there even a reason to buy this in the year of our lord 2025?
