Kana Quest

-No exit button -Upon closing the game and reopening it your progress has gone back a few levels forcing you to complete them again if you want gold medals on every level -Won't learn much outside of hiragana and katakana shapes and pronunciations + dakuten & handakuten. -Besides the achievements for them, you won't learn any Japanese words or sentences. -Lack of being able to use the keyboard to type in the characters for mystery kana. A noble attempt but overall not a very good learning tool and an otherwise lengthy puzzle game.

The game seems like it has a good premise, but it's a bit broken and doesn't always seem to save your progress, which is annoying

Really sad to write a negative review for this because I love the concept of the game and it's visually lovely to look at. My kana skills are rusty so I thought it would be a great way to get back into the swing of things but the language learning aspect is definitely secondary to the puzzle aspect. Which would have been fine I enjoy puzzles! But sadly my progress was lost Twice, which made me lose all motivation to continue. There's a lot of potential here that I just won't be able to experience. I might revisit the game in the future and update the review, I generally only write reviews for games I complete so that the game gets a fair shot but after losing multiple worlds' worth of progress I just don't have it in me to continue.

[h1]It’s a decent game with beautiful pixel art. [/h1] The gameplay remains entertaining even if you already know the Kana, thanks to the engaging puzzle element. However, there’s no visible option to quit the game (other than using Alt+F4), and exiting that way doesn’t save your progress. Having to redo the same puzzles just to return to where I left off wasn’t enjoyable. The lack of an exit button and broken save system really hurt the experience, so I’m giving it a 5/10.

Okayish for a puzzlegame, not so good for learning kana. 20 Minutes for 7 Days of regular learning will give you far more progress on your japanese journey then the whole (far longer) game.

This is a really cool idea for a game and I was really enjoying it, especially as I've been learning Japanese... but I can't recommend it because it doesn't save your progress! There's no save button - there's not even an exit button so you can only close the game by alt-F4-ing out of it. When I opened it for the second time and continued where it was saying I was up to, I realised I already completed some of the levels. Then I realised that it was even worse than that - despite going back to all the levels in world 1 to get gold medals, and getting the achievement saying I'd done so, I still had a load of silvers and bronzes. So I went through and got all gold again, closed the game, and sure enough, next time I opened it, I'd lost them again. So I just had one final go - I completed all of world 2 in gold and all of world 3 bar a silver in the last level (but still got the achievement for all gold as it gives you that on the second to last level for some reason). Closed the game... and it's reset me all the way back to halfway through world 2. So I won't be bothering to play it again because there's no point if it doesn't save.
