Kao The Kangaroo is a 3D platformer from veterans of the genre Tate Multimedia, featuring a plucky, cheeky but a cutie, Kao The Kangaroo (Hey, just like in the title!) on a quest to uncover the truth around the disappearance of his father.

During his journey, Kao will explore a wide variety of beautifully detailed environments, each harboring secrets to uncover. At every turn, Kao faces new challenges. He’ll have to use all his skills while learning some new ones...not all of them being natural to the world he lives in! As they say, it’s the journey that makes us, not the destination.

Kao the Kangaroo was a franchise I remembered from my childhood, particularly Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, which I originally played years ago. Coming back to the series with this modern reboot, I expected a simple platformer that would preserve the identity of the older games while modernizing the visuals and controls. In some ways it succeeds, but in others it feels like the game lost sight of what made Kao enjoyable in the first place. Visually, the game is a clear improvement over the older titles. The environments are colorful, character models are well made, and the overall presentation is polished. The cutscenes are also enjoyable and help give the adventure some personality. At its core, the combat remains recognizable, with Kao using his gloves to fight enemies much like he did in previous games. The problem is that the game constantly slows itself down with systems that add length without adding much value. Instead of focusing on platforming and progression, the game introduces a large number of collectibles, currencies, challenge portals, cosmetics and progression requirements. I grew up playin the first three games and loved every minute of them, but this new one was a massive letdown. The levels are pretty easy, and so are all the boss fights. The puzzles are overly simplistic. The devs put very little effort into polishing the game. It's packed with bugs and oversights, such as the 30k golden skin still being impossible to unlock after the latest update. This game is definitely not worth its price.
It's not bad, but it's not good either. Actually would have been better with no story and no voice acting, both of which make you wonder why they even bothered. The 3D platforming gameplay is passable, but nothing special. Not a worthwhile experience.
Fun 3D platformer! Great remaster
I'm not a fan of Kao's voice acting, and I don't like the fact that some question mark barrels have explosives in them, randomly, incentivizing you to not check all of them, or your health will be damaged. The platforming was okay and the fighting was too, But it's not as slick/ responsive as other platformer games. I played the demo of this years ago, and it was okay, but it's not really my thing.
Insanely boring level design and the characters have some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard; somehow a pair of gloves sounds better than the main character himself.
