About Killer Frequency

✦ AI summary

You're a small-town radio DJ fielding desperate calls from residents being hunted by a mysterious killer, solving puzzles and making real-time decisions to save their lives through the night. It's a darkly comedic 1987-set slasher puzzle game where branching dialogue, environmental clues, and riddle-solving unfold in a fully voiced, authentically detailed radio station packed with retro-era interactivity.

The year is 1987, and as the clock strikes midnight in small-town Gallows Creek, USA, former big city radio DJ Forrest Nash is live on air in what will turn out to be the graveyard shift of a lifetime...

In this horror comedy, you must solve puzzles to save callers from being hunted down by a mysterious killer. Where every call is life and death, can you save the inhabitants of Gallows Creek?

Unique 1st person narrative:

Step into the shoes of a late-night radio talk-show host – new in town and fallen from grace. The Police Chief is dead… so the townsfolk turn to you for help, as apparently you, Forest Nash are the only person in town who can run a phone line.

Real-time decisions and puzzle solving:

Use branching dialogues to interact with a variety of eccentric small-town personalities including potential victims and suspects. Explore your surroundings, gather clues, make decisions, solve satisfying riddles, and try to help each of your callers survive the night.

Retro Slasher setting:

Jump back in time to 1987 with this slasher inspired puzzler – explore an authentically detailed radio station and interact with dozens of physics-based objects straight from a bygone era, including a working cassette and record player. With a fully voiced cast and a killer original soundtrack of 80's inspired tunes from rock classics to synthwave!

While Killer Frequency has an interesting premise, actually playing the game was unfun. You play a radio DJ in a small town while a serial killer is loose on the streets. Because the local police are dead you serve as the town's 911 for the evening and your job is to direct them to safety using various clues and puzzles you find throughout the radio station. This is all neat! However, actually playing the game boils down to standing around and listening to people talk on the phone and occasionally choosing a dialogue option, but it's mostly standing around and listening. While that is going on you can shoot and infinite number of paper balls into a basketball hoop trash can. I spent an hour with the game and got through the first two phone calls. On the third, when I realized this was just what the game was, I quit. The writing isn't the best and that severely hurts a game that is completely reliant on you listening to it. I wanted to like this game, but it's not for me. If you're a fan of visual novels and maybe even walking simulators, but there isn't much of that either, you might enjoy this game.

A killer soundtrack, a well-crafted nostalgia-fueled art design, inspired voice acting, clever and funny dialogues, a fantastic finale — hell, not even Ponty's Pizza themselves — can save us from the absolute snooze-fest that is “Killer Frequency”'s gameplay design. If I'm to find a positive though, I would say the game's main advantage—an advantage I believe even fans of a slower, self-paced gaming experience would appreciate—is its short playtime.

Has potential, but it's just so mechanically dull I couldn't stick with it. Maybe I'll watch a let's play or go back to the game jam version, so I don't have to spend so much time poking the microphone and stacking mugs.
