Lilja and Natsuka Painting Lies

I went back and forth on whether to recommend this VN or not, but about [u]80% of it bored me[/u] to various degrees. From a technical standpoint it's perfectly fine, there are some beautiful CGs and the OST is serviceable with a few tracks that stand out, the voice acting is good too, as is the translation. Unfortunately I didn't find it an enjoyable read, which saddens me to say because the main relationship is quite fascinating with really lovely moments (if you treat their [b]incredibly puzzling age gap[/b] as a non-factor, you have to be willing to ignore it just like the game does, the same story could've been told with both of them being of legal age so I don't understand why it's like this). My [b]main issue[/b] is its [u][b]repetitiveness[/b][/u], some concepts really get hammered on [i]over and over again[/i] to the point of frustration. While not being exclusive to it, this issue is felt the most when it comes to the "mystery" aspect of the game; a lot of the time it's clear what's really going on but due to the protagonist's characterization the reader is usually ten steps ahead of her, and even when she finally catches on [b]one has to read through the characters' te…

This visual novel was incredibly lovely! I'm a big fan of Asou Ei's previous work, including Euphoria, and the writing just gets better and better with every release. This is a very emotional story, beautiful in its discussions of themes centering art, disability, and religion. The main characters are incredibly real, very lovable, and I loved witnessing their stories, seeing their flaws, and rooting for them throughout. Their love for each other is beautiful and very realistic. The side characters are all wonderful and get fleshed out well for their time in the story, too, a very pleasant surprise. Overall a very good game, and I definitely recommend it, especially for any big fans of yuri!

Recommended, but with caveats. This is a yuri visual novel with a disabled deuteragonist, which is something that we sadly don't get all that often. The disability rep is way, way better than I expected: while staying somewhat surface level, the novel is not afraid to briefly get into the importance of independence and keeping your dignity while needing care, and there are some great lines that hit close to home as a disabled person. They even namedrop a possible diagnosis at some point, which is surprising and quite welcome, and very much aligned with reality (although my girl here should get checked for [spoiler]NMOSD[/spoiler], but that's just my opinion). The structure is quite simple, with each chapter following a specific painting's creative process, which results in some sort of lesbian mystery. Easy to read, easy to follow, every single one is predictable but satisfying, and furthers the relationship between the two main characters while adding some spice with a strong but somewhat one-dimensional secondary cast. The ups the downs of the story keep you hooked throughout. The characters interactions bring live to this amazing story. Every character brought a different element to the story, and the way it all came together in the end brought even more life to the story. The music and sounds and also more depth to the story. Overall this VN is worth every penny in my book!
