Little Laps is so close to being a perfect capsule racing game. The core physics are simple - given your car's speed and the curvature of the track, it will oversteer. If it is oversteering beyond a certain threshold while you have the throttle pressed, you'll crash. Lap after lap, you'll build momentum and shave milliseconds off of your best time. It's flow-y, rhythmic, and a lot of fun! However, two issues hold it back: 1) Since you cannot crash if the throttle is not pressed, the physics of hairpins are very unintuitive. You can keep the throttle pinned up until the hairpin turn begins, and then "bounce" through it at higher speeds than you can maintain through long sweeping corners. This issue can be forgiven, it's quite fun once you get it! 2) The much larger issue is what an absolute flow-killer crashing is. It takes a button press + 10-15 seconds to build your momentum again. It's simply is too harsh of a punishment for fractional mistakes, and makes the player spend more time getting back up to speed than actually going for fast laps. I think there are solutions here, possibly starting with a bit of speed when resetting so that the player isn't building back from 0 each …5 found this helpful
Overall the game feels arcadie and fun when you get take the turns physically defyingly fast. It is also fun to try and optimize the best lap time and see what can be done to eek out a slightly better time. Critiques (in no particular order) - Currently lap timer is started immediately should be started only when car is moving for the first time. No need to have time loss because I didn't hold down space bar while pressing R. - Road paint dashes should be evenly spaced. I understand this is because texturing a spline is difficult but it makes the game look unpolished for its core feature. - Ghosts are somewhat confusing because you don't know how many laps it took them to get to that speed. - Levels should have bronze, silver, gold, dev times to beat in addition to the leader board. I see that this is in the achievements with "Level-Name 1/2/3" formatted goals, but those goals should be surfaced in the level and there should be a ghost for each of these time goals. Each track in the level select needs to have a medal showing if you have beaten the medal time or not. Furthermore when pausing in a level, all of the level details should take up the left side of the screen and the bu…4 found this helpful
Played the demo back when that dropped, and had a bunch of fun. Simple yet hard to master gameplay. Very fun3 found this helpful
Little Laps is beautifully simple, yet wonderfully challenging. The visual style is very pleasing and almost soothing. I bought the game for myself and my nephew so we could play at the same times. It's facilitated us being able to bond over crashing out frequently.1 found this helpful
