Lost in Spice

Lost in Spice is a VR exclusive cooking simulator similar in theme to Overcooked or Cook, Serve, Delicious! where you prepare a couple of meals for aliens. The game is let down by very low poly art assets, and seems to have been made a VR game as a gimmick, or to prevent comparison with non-VR games, a comparison this game would fail badly at. Developers must learn that if the only thing that makes their game cool is VR, then all that means is VR is cool, and their game isn't cool at all. There's only a small number of recipes to make and the gameplay is fairly shallow. The game is completely free. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. This is certainly a gesture that shows dedication to the gaming industry. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality…

Lost in Spice takes the familiar idea of a cooking game and places it inside an amusing science-fiction scenario designed specifically around virtual reality. Instead of managing an ordinary restaurant, the player has been abducted by aliens and put to work at the Intergalactic House of Planets. Cooking becomes a matter of survival, as disappointing the extraterrestrial clientele carries the rather extreme threat of vaporization. It is a deliberately ridiculous premise that gives an otherwise straightforward cooking challenge a memorable identity. The game was developed by Theo Tsapakos, Will Kane, Bryan Song, and Jacob Ginsparg, while no separate named publisher is prominently specified. At the center of the experience is hands-on VR interaction. Rather than selecting ingredients and kitchen tools through conventional menus, players physically reach for objects with tracked motion controllers. Ingredients can be picked up, positioned, chopped, prepared, and combined as part of completing each order.
