About Markus Ritter - Ghosts Of The Past
What can you expect?
We affectionately call it "queer cheesy trash". The 90s FMVs had their own charm and that included exaggerated acting, exaggerated characters and a penchant for hoarding items. We want to get back to that.
- 100% FMV Point and Click Adventure Game
- 2 alternating playable main characters
- 15 different playable locations in Austria
- 13 interactive NPCs
- classic point and click puzzles!
Story
Markus was recently a pretty normal average guy. He has no particular ambitions in life and keeps his head above water as a photographer of photo books of questionable quality. But when he is plagued by nightmares, he starts to investigate. And a letter addressed to him, but with the wrong surname, changes his life completely.

The blood of a time-honored family of Shadowhunters beats in his heart. And with it comes a responsibility to his fellow man. For the Shadowhunters are destined to fight demonic beings, so-called 'shadows'. One such monster is currently killing in Vienna and has already claimed countless victims. Will Markus be up to the task?

But not only the supernatural plagues our young Shadowhunter. His publisher has big plans for a book that Markus himself hasn't even written. Will his presence in the public eye be advantageous, or will it hinder his existence as a Shadowhunter?

Then there's also his love life, which takes off at a most inconvenient time. There's Claudia, the secretary, but also Ludwig, the charismatic digital designer.
And then there's Ro. A young woman who suddenly appears everywhere the shadow is. What's the story behind her?

If you think you get anything close to a Gabriel Knight adventure, you don't. The only resembelance is the main character being a shadow hunter (through a troubled family). First of all if you want to get more background story, play Markus Ritter - The Lost Family first, which is an ever shorter (but free) then this, but kind of annoying (most of the game consists of taking photographs). There are several quirks that could easily be fixed like typo's, the short fmv loops making the characters look weird when you are looking at the screen for a minute. But my biggest gripe is there just aren't (m)any puzzles, atleast none that will make you think, as the puzzles that are, are pretty straightforward and on top of that a flimsy (murder) storyline. 5/10.8 found this helpful
This game was pretty good. It was a bit rough around the edges. But the FMV was great, and I really liked the world they were building. I was a bit confused what to do a lot, but making games is hard. This probably would have taken me hours longer if I hadn't consulted a walkthrough after being of tired of not making progress. It just felt like the "to-do" list wasn't helpful at all beyond just reminding you what you were actually doing if you reloaded the game after not playing for a while. A lot of the plot didn't make sense to me either, but if I don't think about it that hard it's not bad. I really hope these people keep making games cuz they got a pretty cool thing going for them, but if they make another title I hope they focus a bit more on player progression being more clearly communicated.1 found this helpful
What an improvement over the demo! I enjoyed the demo thoroughly, but every part of Ghosts of the Past is improved, video quality, game mechanics, pacing, even the acting is better. It's not a long game, but it's a solid edition to the Shattenjager legacy from the Gabriel Knight games. If you like FMV games, this tour of dark occult Vienna is worth your time.1 found this helpful
I like this game, good old FMV stuff. It was fun to play, even when it was not always clear what to do next, I had some unintentionally funny moments with Markus and Ro alonge the road.1 found this helpful
I really appreciate the fan fiction nature of doing another one of these games, and how hard it must have been to make this game. I also really enjoyed the demo which they made, I assume to get funding. Sometimes, this is quite good, but it also has the worst tropes of games of this kind, clicking on exact spots in exact orders, things not being clickable until the right sequence in the game, obscure puzzles, bad UI etc. The language keeps defaulting back to German even though I have the settings correct, so I have to reload again and again sometimes. I wish I liked this game more, because I really like that this was made.
