Escapism at its best

Melody's Escape 2 features some pleasing music, but the gameplay itself left me cold. Games like AVICII Invector and Rhythm Doctor do a much better job of making you feel like you're playing the music, on rhythm, without needing to rely on a needlessly convoluted control scheme; Melody's Escape 2 fails in this regard. On Hard difficulty, matters get even worse, when the game asks you to use both WASD *and* cursor keys, for one of the most convoluted control schemes imaginable.

Melody's Escape 2 takes the familiar rhythm-game formula in a distinctive direction by transforming a player’s own music collection into playable obstacle courses. Instead of relying entirely on a fixed soundtrack and manually created charts, it analyzes compatible music files and generates stages around their rhythm, tempo, intensity, and other musical characteristics. The result is an experience that can feel remarkably personal, particularly when playing songs you already know well. Developed and published by Icetesy, it is a focused sequel built around making music feel physical through running, jumping, sliding, and other synchronized actions. The strongest element is the relationship between the music and Melody’s movement. Songs are not merely used as background audio while unrelated obstacles appear on screen. The game attempts to interpret changes within each track and translate them into changes in movement and level structure. Calmer passages can produce slower sequences, while energetic sections increase the sense of speed and momentum. I have absolutely adored this game since I've gotten it last year while it was still in early access, and has got to be by favorite game in terms of Music-Based Procedural Generation, there's no other quite like it, simple but so beautifully made, you just pick as song and enjoy it in a more interactive way. Sure, compared to the first game, it's not as simple in regards to the environment being 3 dimensional instead of the flat 2D, so there is a learning curve to knowing how to time your inputs. But the input detection is more lenient compared to the first game [I struggled quite a lot with perfect scores because the hitbox is pretty small even though I had the timing right, it was pretty odd] , and you learn quickly that on the perspective, your inputs should be timed as Melody steps in the middle of the shape. Obviously it's not good to compare it over the fact that it's different in that regard in the first place. The same learning curve applied to the first game can be applied to the second game, as a lot of things are with "practice makes perfect". I would just like to see way less of them both being compared over the change in perspective. That being said, the scenery and …

Melody's Escape 2 is a fantastic rhythm game. That is so accuractely reads your music and creates courses that ebb and flow to the melody and beat is a real achievement. Honestly, it's the perfect game to unwind with some great music, especially with it's playlist mode (playing an album front to back is a blast). Highly recommned picking this up.

As a big fan of the first game, I have a few thoughts. - It seems a bit easier than the first game. - Had to remap my controller because I'm using a WiiU pro controller, which is my favorite controller-- I like having both sticks at the top-- if you wanna fite me send a message you can pick the parking lot we throw down in. In the previous game, I could use only the stick so this wasn't something I had to do. I actually liked using the sticks over the buttons and being able to use both sticks together so I could alternate hands hitting the cues. Maybe I'm just weird. - Works best with songs that are at least a medium tempo. While it does 'work' with downtempo and slower songs, it's an action-based game so I think you do get, in my opinion, a better experience with some songs than other. Slower sections of faster songs are fine, but I tried it with some very slow ballads just to test and melody had a nice leisurely stroll through the whole song. I'm sure this is by design, and maybe this could be a fun way to unwind, but it's not what I personally am looking for. 9/10 - Songs that are too slow aren't great.
