The Cold War setting sounded interesting at first, especially because it offered something different from the usual World War II campaigns. Unfortunately, after a few hours it became clear that this felt more like a standalone DLC than a proper Men of War game. The biggest problem is the structure. Previous Men of War titles focused on missions, objectives, different scenarios and at least some form of campaign progression. Cold War replaces that with a repetitive system of earning resources, buying units, deploying them and repeating the same process over and over again. The mechanics are still recognizably Men of War, but the gameplay loop feels completely disconnected from what made the series enjoyable in the first place. What makes this even more disappointing is that the Cold War theme had a lot of potential. Instead of using that setting to create new types of missions, new tactical situations or a fresh direction for the franchise, the game feels like a small side project built on top of Assault Squad 2. I never felt motivated to continue playing and eventually lost interest completely. The more I played, the more it felt like a fan-made mod that had been turned into a s…6 found this helpful
I enjoyed men of war 2 a lot so i thought I would try this out since i am really interested in the cold war. I got it for $1.97 and i still refunded it. The game has a severe identity crisis, its like they couldn't decide between late 50s and early 60s and Vietnam as the timeframe. Its all over the place, you have squads with m60s but soldiers still using m1 garands with the leader having a M16, same for the Soviets only the squad leader will have an AK-47. The tanks are all over the place, yes T-34s and Shermans would have seen combat if the Cold War got hot, but there are so many better choices, unless the devs intended for the Soviets and the US to throw the reserves of their reserves at eachother there should be more "modern" vehicles. I am aware not every unit was fully equipped with assault rifles, but come on only having one AK-47 or M16 in a large squad that is set in the COLD WAR is egregious. The two most iconic weapons, that are so important that they basically became symbols of the East and West during the cold war make only a minor appearance in a game set during the COLD WAR. Not even the Spetsnaz squads have more than one or two AK-47s, if anything the Spetsnaz…2 found this helpful
Men of War: Assault Squad 2 – Cold War takes the tactical foundation established by its predecessor and reimagines it within the volatile political landscape of the Cold War. Developed by Digitalmindsoft and published by Fulqrum Publishing, this standalone strategy title departs from the battlefields of World War II in favor of an alternate-history conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. The result is a familiar yet distinctive experience that introduces more modern military technology while preserving the demanding, detail-oriented gameplay that has become synonymous with the Men of War franchise. The game's greatest strength lies in its commitment to tactical realism. Every mission requires careful planning rather than brute force, encouraging players to make thoughtful use of terrain, defensive positions, and combined-arms tactics. Infantry, armored vehicles, artillery, helicopters, and aircraft each have clearly defined battlefield roles, making unit composition and positioning just as important as firepower. The return of the Direct Control feature remains one of the series' defining mechanics, allowing players to manually command individual soldiers or vehic…1 found this helpful
