Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is an interesting game to revisit because it essentially laid the foundations for what would later become Men of War. Even though I never played Soldiers during its original release period, after spending years with Men of War, Assault Squad and Assault Squad 2, it is easy to recognize where many of those mechanics came from. Direct unit control, inventory management, vehicle combat and the focus on tactical decision-making were already present here and helped create an identity that remained largely unchanged for many years. The problem is not the game itself. The problem is that after playing so many later versions of this formula, going back to the beginning feels difficult. What was once innovative has since been refined, expanded and repeated across multiple titles, making Soldiers feel more like a historical piece of the franchise than something I would actively choose to play today. I still respect what it achieved for its time and I can easily recommend it to fans of Men of War who want to see where the formula started. Dirt cheap and runs easy 60 fps on several decade old laptops. The UI is still 20 years old but workshop and steam networking make this a really good buy. Very fun game. Especially with friends. I think. I have none. :steamsad: Goes as low as 70 cents on sale2 found this helpful
Game from my Childhood. My dad bought it for us :) We both played on computer back then. Still great as i remember, also workshop support. Obviously it's not like men of war, battles are on a smaller scale and you always lead either small forces 1-2 tanks+infantry or a squad of few commandos. Of course it lacks some common modern interface features but it's a good game nevertheless ... The direct fire mode familiar to Men of War players is already in place and some nice field interactions for a 2004 game . Expect a harder difficulty level and smaller numbers in this one , it's more like commando or desperate operations I would say .1 found this helpful
