Mida's Adventure

Looks like this is going to be the first non-pre-release review and first non-free-game review for this game. In other words, at time of writing, this is the only review here written by somebody who paid for it. I love Paganitzu and this builds on that fairly well. However, it commits the cardinal sin of most games aiming to feel like a late 80s/very early 90s PC game, as it has music that is more at home on the consoles of the era. PCs never sounded like this. Even graphically I think it looks more like a late NES game, maybe early SNES with the 3D look of some of the pickups. It is extremely difficult and punishing. That's not a negative, more of an FYI. So why have I given it a thumbs down? Well it certainly doesn't deserve "100% positive" reviews, so I'm balancing it out. It's a good game on sale, not sure it's worth the full price. 100% Deck compatible though, so it should have a green tick, although I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that the Valve compatibility marks are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Mida's Adventure is a retro-styled action-puzzler in the style of Sokoban or classic games like Chip's Challenge. The core conceit is to collect all necessary disks on each level to unlock the requisite doors, avoiding enemies along the way and collecting optional pickups to boost your score. What's here is generally well-executed and well-presented: the graphics are crisp and interesting (particularly due to the slightly-skewed 3D perspective on the playing field), the chiptunes are catchy and memorable, and the core gameplay mechanics all work well in tandem. It's all a nice throwback to days of old and a simpler style of game. However, there are a few fundamental changes that could really boost the fun factor here: - "Game Over" is a relic of the past and really demolishes any momentum the player has built up. You're almost guaranteeing the majority of your playerbase won't ever get past the first world, as I also didn't notice any way to acquire additional lives. I'd just ditch the mechanic entirely, to be frank. - Some enemy patterns, while clearly predefined and predictable, don't adhere to what I would consider to be established norms. This is a cute little game that feels like a long-forgotten shareware title from the early 90s (with slightly upgraded graphics, obviously). Doesn't reinvent the wheel, but that's not the point! I especially liked the fact that you have limited lives. No save points, no mercy: if you die mid-episode, then it's back to the start. At 10 levels per episode, that's not too bad, actually. Definitely worth a look if you dig the whole retro vibe.

It's a fun game, I really enjoyed it but with two exceptions: 1. Perspective. It would look much better top down or zoomed out so that the whole level fits on the screen. Panning looks absolutely terrible and is distracting. 2. Frogs. You can't reliably solve a puzzle if you have randomly moving elements. Frogs make it overly difficult to get the no-continue and 9000-points achievements.

First off, this game is a blast! A retro marvel with plenty of great puzzles and challenges to play through. I'd say everything it's trying too do it succeeds at. It gives the player a feeling of joy after completing each and every stage. Pros: -Perfect Controls (WASD) -Nostalgic Art Style -Good Level Design -Challenging -Great Price Point -Low System Requirements Cons: - I want more levels! - Addicting - No Sound Sliders Overall I'd say this game is very worth playing! If you like retro puzzlers and want a taste of the old classics this is definitely spot on!
