My Summer Love: Memories

I played very few dating games. Sometimes the reason was that the protagonist came across as quite a moron, hard to identify with and even harder to imagine him getting any date of all, but more often it was because I could never get the girl I wanted. I finally had to use a guide which always left me wondering at the strange stuff I had to do or say to get her; and, of course, using a guide killed even that little suspense there is in such games. My Summer Love solves both problems. First of all, the protagonist is beautiful to look at and not only sensitive but a very stable genius as well – one wonders why he has to play such games at all. Also, a guide would be useless; you don't choose between A, B and C, you actually have to think how you would and will act or react in a real time frame. The process is complicated by the fact that the girl has a personality of her own, with her own memories and traumas which can become quite a problem: the suspense is therefore always there, even in a seemingly completely innocent scene. You can go back and replay an episode, of course, but while the scenes sequence is fixed what happens within them is not – a problem might disappear and ano…

The whole idea of ai powered personalities fascinates me. And i'm interested to see how far it can be taken and how complex it could become in the future. This is a one man developer game so it's not going to be cutting edge with all the fancy bells and whistles of a bigger budget game but i think what is here is done very well considering the constraints it must have been made under. Kang Yuna has her own personality so it's not just a case of answering the right questions in a particular order and boom you're a cassanova. You have to talk with her (about anything) explore her interests, and earn her trust before even thinking about trying to romance her unless you want to get shut down before you even started. You know?, like a real romance. Obviously it's not massively complex and there are some odd quirks like when she will randomly start recounting a bad memory that isn't even remotely related to the topic at hand and her negativity will shoot up making it difficult to avoid a game over if it happens early on in the chapter. But i enjoyed my time with the game and i'm interested to see just how far the technology might go.

Romance/dating sim You stop to help a beautiful Korean woman who has car trouble, then find she is deep, very intelligent, and charming as well. The love interest is powered by A.I., and has a personality that responds to your open ended messages. Overall, it was fun. I recommend this game if you like this genre. There were a couple of flaws. You will probably want to close as many applications as possible while running this game, otherwise it runs poorly. Still, there were no discernible bugs, and it ran well enough on my old laptop. I got couple of odd comments from the love interest. I recommend this game if you like this genre.

This is the future of video games; systems crafted by human hands and given near infinite possibility by the power of AI. These systems will never become dull or boring, will always adapt to become things you never even knew you wanted until they are there, presented complete to you, bells and whistles and all. The potential for such systems is truly staggering and it started right here in the guise of a romantic visual novel. Not saying it's perfect, but it's definitely a very confident first step in the right direction. What I would like to see is a chat history for the story mode of the game (it exports to a text log file, or even a CSV that can be imported into Excel) as some of the conversations Yuna and I have are frankly fascinating and it's a shame that those conversations are just lost (or stored in the memory files that we can't easily access, unless I'm misunderstanding something). Also, there are parts in the game where Yuna will say something that essentially means, 'We're going to the next scene now', but it's not phrased like that so you type in something that continues the conversation you've been having only to have the game jump straight to the 'loading' screen.…
