This game is best described as a spin-off / epilogue of NeverAwake. To make this clear from the get-go : This product is aimed for players of the original who want a more arcade experience. It will alienate peoples looking for large amount of contents, and will make no effort to hide it
While it still keep the design philosophy of appealing to both the general public and arcade enthusiasts, it is also far less compromising for the former. This is what it means in practice. The game will provide all the tools necessary to be completable by players of all skills level, to the point that every achievements could be accomplished by someone trying out the genre for the first time. Despite that, at no point does it remotely feel like hand-holding, even ditching the classic "continue" system that exist in virtually every arcade games. However, the true appeal is the scoring system. While it also existed in the previous NeverAwake, it was restricted to individual levels, and each would take too long to become interesting. FLASHBACK solve this issue with the addition of difficulties level (Low, Middle, High, Super High, Ultra High), as well as dynamic rank difficulty, and …5 found this helpful
The original NeverAwake is an excellent—and, in my opinion, underrated—game. Its mechanics, aesthetic, and narrative all work together beautifully. NeverAwake Flashback, however, feels more like a soft remix than a true follow-up, and it should have been handled differently. This should have been either a $5.99 DLC featuring extra modes built mostly from existing content (which is essentially what this is), or a free update released for the game’s three-year anniversary. To the developers’ credit, Flashback is priced lower than the original, but that alone doesn’t make this approach feel acceptable—especially given the original's (undeserved yet prevalent) lukewarm reception. What would have justified the price tag here was a meaningful refresh of the assets—at least three-fifths of them. Instead, it appears that nearly every enemy and boss (easily 90% or more) has been copied & pasted directly from the original. The only noticeably different in-game asset are game's currency, “souls,” and they look objectively worse than the original version. Taken on its own, NeverAwake Flashback is competently made and fun to play, but when viewed alongside its predecessor, it comes across as a…4 found this helpful
A little too barebones. Just pickup the original game. Also unsure why we must play through the same intro level every time a seed is started, totally ruins the "random" run feel1 found this helpful
I absolutely loved the original and I love this prequel. Gabe-chan's blocking ability is super fun. Lightweight roguelike mechanics work nicely. There's interplay between clearing fast and hanging out to get better multipliers. I hope to see more options and unlockables in future updates. But even now, I highly recommend this title!1 found this helpful
whoa
It’s decent, but not much more.
