Neversong

I’ve played through Neversong multiple times, not just for enjoyment but to study its game design. The mechanics are simple but extremely polished, and the vine swinging is probably my favorite mechanic in the game. It feels solid, responsive, and satisfying every time you use it. The atmosphere, art, music, and environmental storytelling are also incredibly memorable. There’s a lot to learn from how the game builds its world and delivers its ideas without overcomplicating things. Definitely recommended.

I've watched Thomas Brush on Youtube for years and always thought he was kind of the lovable idiot of the semi-successful game dev world, I also bought Pinstripe and gave it a quick go and thought it was a nice game, but never really got into it. Neversong, on the other hand, is one of the best indie games I've played in years, I'd almost be tempted to say it's a masterpiece. The opening area had me slightly worried with its PT vibes, but once I got past that it had me hooked and I practically beat it one sitting (just stopping to have something to eat), which is a real rarity for me. I usually just have a quick go on these games and then never play them again, as I did with Pinstripe. But playing Neversong has me wondering if Thomas Brush is a secret genius. Highly recommended. I seriously wish I'd picked this up years ago, when it first came out.

I find myself coming back to this game a lot. Every now and then, mostly around halloween, I like to sit down and play through this game from start to finish and just soak in the vibes. Probably the best part about this game is the music. The music somehow perfectly captures the feeling you had as a child when going on an adventure during summer. All the little melodies are incredibly memorable and hit me on a very emotional level. The sound design overall is just incredible. There are these sections when a narrator reads you scary dialogue in a distorted horrible manner that just sounds horrifying. The art style is also really good. Everything just looks nice and it all fits in with the autumn vibe this game has. Overall I just can't recommend this game enough as it's a lot of fun and I always enjoy coming back to it.

Gloomy, atmospheric game drowning you in methaphors. I liked it for the most part. I'm not a fan of platforming and bosses, and at some places I was close to giving up, but - while janky - everything was doable eventually. If you're better than me (and that's not hard), you might breeze through it. If you're good and up for a challenge, you'll be bored. Gameplay-wise, it doesn't have much to offer: New movements mechanics are act as locks for the gated chapters. Exploration is rather bland and unrewarding (you'll only find collectibles). Recommended, but honestly, I liked Pinstripe better. Less obscure and therefore a more relatable story. This one here is - even if you do some research and grasp it eventually - will still leave just with a "well, okay, got it" impression - it's too far fetched to come with any emotional impact. Also note that there's a game breaking bug the dev didn't care to fix over the last years. If you're unlucky, you've got to restart the whole game.

I enjoyed the beautiful art of this game and the story is very good. I love how creepy the bosses and some elements can be without being downright horror. I would recommend this game to almost anyone.
