About NO LOVE

✦ AI summary

Join Agro on an epic adventure to stop the dark force threatening to destroy the world in this character-driven, story-rich RPG packed with original hand-drawn art, witty humor, and an amazing soundtrack. With branching choices that matter, forgiving gameplay that lets you save freely, and enough artistic charm to justify the developer's exhaustion, this one-person passion project offers a genuinely unique narrative experience unlike anything you've played before.

Agro awakes in his towns sanctuary and decides to leave his life behind to go on an adventure. He then sets out to try and stop the being Darkness who wants to destroy the world.

This game is unlike any other game that you’ve ever played before and is a once in a lifetime experience! But, I want to be clear that this game is not for everyone. Please look at the description of content below.

Features:

    - Completely original story, where you probably won't know where it's going to go next!

    - Character-rich story where the game is really about the characters and their journey.

    - Text heavy game.

    - No grind imho! Like, literally just walk to where you need to go and you should be the right level.

    - Tons of jokes made from Wallace Lovecraft himself.

    - Completely original handdrawn art, all done by Wallace Lovecraft!

    - Amazing soundtrack with songs made by lovely people!

    - I would say that it's a casual game and it's pretty forgiving.

    - 2 choices matter adventure games within the game with multiple endings in both!

    - Save “pretty much” whenever you want!

    - Can be played with one hand!

    - Created by one person, Wallace Lovecraft, except the music!

    - Action packed with tons of fighting and blood and stuff.

    - Art, art, art, so much art, like seriously so much art. So exhausted arting all the time, so much art.

    - That's all that I can think of right now, take care, farewell, bye bye, kiss kiss!

Like most great RPGs, the story is the best part of NO LOVE. It’s very interesting and a good look into the mind of the game’s creator Wallace Lovecraft. The core loop of the game is to explore an area, then do a boss fight, then watch a cool cut scene. You’ll meet an interesting cast of characters with some funny quirks, that feel true to real people. Grinding for Exp seems pretty optional if you have a good grasp of rpg mechanics, but I found myself grinding some random encounters while looking for secrets. The secret areas had additional cutscenes, definitely worth seeking out. In the early game I found myself equipping my characters for physical attacks since MP is limited and spells have long cool downs. But as you level up and get more spells, and thus magic attack based loadouts are more viable. But I still felt like I would waste turns having to use a weak physical attack well waiting out some cooldowns. In the late game you are basically forced to use magic attacks. The final aera felt like a bit of a slogg, just walking through a long maze and repeating the same fight over and over. There was a patch to make that part a bit easier, but the maze is still quite a bit lo…

I simply agree with another reviewer that the story is the best part of NO LOVE. It has an interesting exploration of various topics, even when I don't necessarily agree with it. I can't really explain the story without spoilers, although I wish the story lasted a bit longer. As for the gameplay, it's just so-so. Some grinding is needed to either level up or earn lots of money, where I skipped it by cheating to get A ♥♥♥♥ TON of money. Outside of battle, I never face any problem with the exception of an area where you need to choose "right" in order to continue. I got stuck there, although the developer gave me help. Talking about visuals, the lack of stock-looking assets is insane. In addition, both cutscenes and animation looks really cool. The music also did a good job of emphasizing both the cutscenes and story.

NO LOVE is one of few hidden RPGMaker gems that RPGMaker enthusiasts should consider playing. P.S. I skipped grinding and didn't try to explore all areas or complete all side quests, so I expect you'll need more than 7 hours to beat this game.

I played for about half an hour and was satisfied with what I played. I realized that it wasn't a game for me. That said, I have a dream of making my own indie game and this game has been a recent huge inspiration. I didn't know that there were a lot of cussing in the game, but I've also never played a game like that, and it gave me such a sense of, artistic freedom, that made me really inspired in what an artist can do. The cutscenes are really fun and cool. And, I guess I'd especially recommend this game to novice artists and game developers like me, it might give you some ideas and inspirations. Also, SUPPORT INDIES!!!
