Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty

The 9/10 and 5/5 reviews are baffling. Visually, this is a fantastic remake with a polished art style. Unfortunately, the gameplay is where it falls apart a little more than admitted by reviewers. If you're here for the original's precise grid based movement, prepare to be disappointed. The remake replaces it with analog movement, momentum, and animation locks, making the controls feel sluggish and inconsistent. Split second inputs often fail to register, turning some previously precise moments into a matter of luck. If you can look past that, do not mind to save scum, and approach it more like a Meat Boy style platformer, you can still overcome the absurdly fast meat grinders and frustrating timing sections. Beyond that, finding the extra Mudokons is still great fun, especially with the count increased from 99 to 299. In the end, I give it a 8/10. Making the analog stick mandatory was a huge mistake. This is Oddworld Abe's Oddysee with a fresh coat of paint more or less The original Abe's Oddysee had 2D sprites with pre-rendered backgrounds, whereas New N Tasty is obviously all 3D modelled. New N Tasty also has continuous screen scrolling as opposed to Oddysee's square segmented level layouts. There's now continuous movement as opposed to the almost grid limited positions of movement of the original game(Not to imply the original movement mechanics for the original are bad) If you know the original like the back of your hand, then you know what to expect with the level layouts and can breeze through it The OST for New N Tasty is entirely redone and expanded from the original Abe's Oddysee OST. It is still dynamic, changing based on statuses like controlling an enemy via possession or being pursued by sligs/scrabs/paramites. The darker grittiness and color palette of the original has been brightened, most especially for Rupture Farms. Other areas of the game are much closer to the original color and look more or less. The art style is largely in-tact otherwise including perhaps one of the most important things: the sense of scale.

It was as if I had gone back to my childhood and experienced the most wonderful feelings of nostalgia and joy. Thank you for these wonderful feelings. It's a great game for relaxing and unwinding.

It's a unique experience and mostly fun, but there's a couple of gotchas that prevent me from actually recommending the game if you don't have it already: - The controls are really janky and cause a LOT of otherwise unnecessary deaths. The controls would be fine if the game was designed to accommodate for them, but it's not. - A lot of deaths are caused by situations that are either difficult or impossible to foresee, so you either react to them correctly largely by luck or learn them by heart. Luckily this remake also includes a quicksave functionality that allows you to freely save at any moment. It's not perfect, because you can end up saving in a situation you can't recover from (but simply dying allows you to restart from a 'good' position), but it changes very many sequences that would otherwise probably be extremely frustrating to only difficult. To summarize: It's a great game if you can overcome the shortcomings, but for many players, it's also sure to be a frustrating experience.

I give this game a 8.5 out of 10. It loses 1 point for that HORRENDOUS DOUBLE MEAT GRINDER section in one of the secret mudokon areas with the three paramites. After rescuing all of the mudokons in that room and dealing with the paramites, I have never died so many times in a single area in all of the game than this one because of those grinders. I'm also docking it another .3 points for the slight damper in control, though it did get better once I enabled "Button to Run" and "Sideway Hop" so I had more control over Abe's movements instead of him sliding into a mine and dying. Another .2 points for some graphical bugs. Nothing detrimental that would prevent me from beating it, but noticeable.
