Olympia Rising

Given how obscure this game is, I don't want to give it a thumbs down, because, for the most part, it's well made, and I know there's people out there who would enjoy it. Yet at the same time, I can't possibly recommend this in good conscience. I should start off by saying this is unapologetically old-school. Not necessarily a good or bad thing, but it's worth noting. I won't say it's brutally difficult because there's way more challenging (new and old) 2D platformers out there. But it does feel pretty barren as far as content goes. The game is relatively short, and there's no unlockables or extra modes or side content. The replayability past the first playthrough is decent if you're into speedruns, but for the average player, you most likely won't want to touch this game ever again in your life, if you can even make it to the end. Also there's no resolution settings, no achievements, no cloud saves etc. It really feels like a bad port of a 90's game. Which sounds cool, until you realize you could be emulating some snes games instead. [h1] Simple little platformer with a bit of monster slashing if you know what I mean. Ascend the tower and collect coins by slashing enemies. Gather enough to proceed to next area, if not repeat. Infinite continues so use them wisely. Animation and movement is smooth however gameplay is without much flair to be honest. [/h1]

Well wasted my time on this game for the last 4hrs and genuinely hate it. The first 3 maps are alright, but the random damage ticks and massive fps drops while playing in full screen are awful. Why tf is it that when im at the end of the level and die i have to run back and collect every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ coin needed again it's tedious and boring.

I got this game as part of the Humble Bundle years ago. I recently decided to give it the attempt it deserved. There's a lot that's good about the game, and it was definitely worth playing under my situation. Here are some things I really enjoyed: It's short, sweet, and fast paced. You won't get bored playing it because it isn't grindy. The mechanics are fluid enough. Stringing combos for more money is super fun. The checkpoints are forgiving. You won't have to replaymore than 5 minutes if you die, allowing you to progress steadily. It looks nice, and the OST is serviceable. It's cheap! However, it has problems that tip the scales against it. The game crashes sometimes on the deck: uncaught node.js errors. It doesn't have any achievements, demotivating me to 100% it. Steam cloud is disabled, so I can't play it on both my PC and Deck. The camera is placed to make travel upward easy, but traveling down is a guessing nightmare. Enemies with more than 2 HP must often be avoided. They slow the pace of the game and halt combos. It's easy to destroy progress + restoration requires noting down a code. This was a fun, pick up and play type game. I love the theme! To me its kind of like a Wizards & Warriors combined with Kid Icarus. The beginning is a little rough since you only start out with three hearts for your life, which made me have a very hard time with the first boss but you get more hearts with each world you pass and the rest of the game becomes more manageable. There are also passwords so you don't have to start over every time. I actually finished it in one 3-4 hour session (had to restart). It's a neat little game, give it a shot when it's on sale.

If this game had some sort of progression (like Metroidvanias such as Hollow Knight or Ori and the Blind Forest) it would be perfect. Without that, you have a well-made game with a somewhat shallow gameplay loop. After 10 minutes you've experienced everything the game has to offer, and you either move on from it or decide to stick with it because "I want to say that I've beaten this game." == played again in 2025 == Tried again and got bored again. Plays like a so-so arcade game. No progression, just level after level of so-so combat. It almost feels like downwell in reverse. It's not awful, but also not a standout in any way.
