Everything is fine and dandy until you reach the final race. That's where the game's main challenge lies. If you want to complete it, you'll have to try again and again, quite a few times, before finally succeeding. I'm exactly the type of audience this game is aimed at. I absolutely love true roguelikes - by that I mean games where everything resets with each run. There is no meta-progression. The only things you carry over are your own knowledge, skill, and experience. Because of that, this game can proudly stand alongside other true roguelikes (that I have played) such as Spelunky, Devil Daggers, and Hyper Demon. There are also upgrades that you can buy before each race. To be honest, I didn't notice any significant difference in gameplay when purchasing them. Usually, I wouldn't buy anything during the first three races and would only purchase two or three upgrades before the final race. However, I actually have no idea whether upgrades stack. Once Upon a Shell is a really silly little racing game, but I ended up enjoying the idea a lot more than I expected. I play as a tortoise who is somehow capable of ridiculous speeds, and instead of slowly walking towards the finish I am sliding downhill on my shell and trying to beat a bunch of overconfident hares. The whole thing has a funny storybook feeling to it, with the classic tortoise and hare idea turned into a fast arcade race. I like that it does not take itself seriously because the ridiculous speed is basically the whole point. The shell sliding is easily the best part for me. I can tuck into my shell, build up speed and then use the slopes and turns to keep my momentum going. It is not just about holding a button and hoping I reach the finish first. I have to think about when I should slide, when I should change direction and how I can keep a combo going without crashing. Once I start getting better at carrying momentum through a course, the races become much more satisfying.
