Organosphere

"Organosphere" is a very mediocre Unity asset flip, a mish-mash of Unity assets dumped in a blender then slathered over a first person shooter blueprint/template. Some effort went into making the various asset flipped weapons not work the way you expect them to... that's a comical revelation about the state of "indie" gaming right there. The game graphics look better than you might expect, but that's just because it looks like some or all of them are "borrowed" from asset stores or wherever. Gamers can tell... and it comes across as insincere. There's also the old adage that those who lack the budget and talent to make their own game assets usually lack the budget and talent to do the rest of the job of game development properly, too. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $15 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. Organosphere is a free first person shooter set in a ruined version of Johannesburg in 2042. I am sent into the city as a rescue operative after an organic virus has turned the place into a mess of overgrown plants and giant insects. The setting is definitely the part that caught my attention first because it is not the usual post apocalyptic city I see in games. I am moving through a strange mixture of ruined streets, vegetation and huge bugs while trying to rescue survivors and work out what actually happened. The story is not amazing, but the setting gives the game its own identity. The shooting is fairly straightforward, but there are a few things that make it more interesting than I expected. I can build and change my weapon with more than 70 possible combinations, which gives me some freedom over how I want to approach combat. There are also different types of enemies, including the oversized insects and soldiers who are trying to stop me. The bullet time ability is probably my favourite part because slowing everything down while dealing with a group of enemies makes some fights feel much more satisfying.
