A very quaint wee rogue-lite game that shows great potential! The graphics are cute and quirky, music is fun and the gameplay is engaging - it's very fun to figure out how to break this game and optimise the runs, learning where the spawns are & how to move as fast as possible. I did experience a few bugs when play-testing this game a while ago but many have been patched by now and even then, they were mostly funny visual things or minor issues that were easily ignored. Overall this game is adorable and worth playing through at least once! Especially since it's free!

It takes the tower defense genre and shrinks it down to a countertop scale turning everyday kitchen appliances and ingredients into clever tools of destruction. Your goal is to keep your precious food supplies safe from waves of hungry ants beetles and even the occasional persistent mouse. The gameplay is fast paced and requires quick thinking as you place specialized traps and units across the tiled floors. I loved the creativity in the arsenal; you aren't just building generic towers but using things like pepper grinders to slow enemies or toaster launchers to blast them back. Managing your resources feels like a stressful shift in a busy restaurant as you scramble to earn enough crumbs to upgrade your defenses before the next rush starts. The level design makes great use of the environment with obstacles like spilled honey or hot stove burners adding tactical layers to your placement. "Pantry Raid" is an unusual, genuinely (but perhaps somewhat jokingly) made action RPG, but with a twist, everything is reskinned to look like a cooking themed RPG. Is this a good idea? No. Did anyone actual ask for this? No. Is this a hidden genre that's just been waiting for the moment to burst on the scene and product hundreds of different cooking themed RPGs and millions of dollars of revenue? Nope. What do you do in the game? It's a crappy and shallow (for an RPG) die-and-retry "roguelike" (and remember, "roguelike" is something amateur developers love because they think it's an excuse not to do any game development work) dungeon crawler (the dungeon is a pantry, whatever). Go on repeated runs into samey, repetitive procgen rooms. Yawn. The graphics aren't great, somewhat low poly, cartoony assets... much better than an asset flip or pixelcrap, but at the same time, far below the standard that's expected from modern, professional PC games. That's understandably a turn off for a lot of gamers, and it's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. A solid start to what could be a really great game, Pantry Raid is an fps rouge-like and does fairly well, it just really needs fleshing out. There are very limited rooms, finding yourself repeating them after one run, mobs spawn in the rooms in the same position each time so this makes it more of a memory game than a reacting game, but I do see a solid baseline. Weapons felt nice, the cooking different meals for buffs was a nice spin on the rouge-like aspect rather than just getting a 1 of 3 selected power up like most. Id say while it remains free, its worth taking a look at.
