✦ AI summary

Players appreciate the concept of making percussion accessible in VR and praise features like velocity-based dynamics, multiple mallet types, sheet music importing, and metronome tools. However, common complaints center on poor hit detection and lack of proper physics—mallets pass through keys rather than colliding with them as solid objects, and glissando doesn't work as expected—plus the four-mallet grip is limited to one style, making certain playing techniques difficult or impossible to execute properly.

Kinda disappointing. Hit detection is kinda bad, especially when using proper technique when playing mallet instruments, you're supposed to try and hit through the key to get a good sound, but you actually do hit through the key with this. Keys need to be solid objects interacting with the mallets, rather than just triggers floating in space that react when the mallet passes through them. The sound should be produced when mallets collide with the keys, with both the mallets and keys being physical objects. Right now with the way it works, it's just too clunky. Plus I played both a major and a minor scale multiple times and didn't get the achievement for them. Just think there's a lot of work that needs to be done here before the game becomes an enjoyable experience.

I played percussive instruments for 10 years until 2017. I miss them, so I've been looking for a substitute in VR. Real vibraphones are... a bit too expensive.VRChat has some instruments but none of them are finished and now I bought Percussive VR during the Winter Sale. The app works but has several flaws: - glissando doesn't work; it plays only every 2nd bar, for example when you start from C up, it's C E G B D (most likely it's intentional to reduce mistakes but I don't see a way to modify it), so you can't play some vibraphone pieces, such as Midnight Star by David Friedman - the vibraphone is dampened by default and the documentation says it requires a USB pedal (I'll try emulating it using controller buttons and steering wheel pedals and update this review if it works) - at least there should be a possibility to use the controllers for that - no mallet/bar collisions (though it doesn't feel bad, it just looks bad) - no avatars, no external cameras, no greenscreens, no alternative environments - the marimba 3D model is unfinished (but overall the models look nice) - no multiplayer - no instrument scaling in 3D But it has several advantages over all available VRChat instrume…

Overall pretty good!! One thing I don’t super like is you’re set to one single mallet grip for 4 mallets: Burton. I think it would be pretty cool if you could toggle the 4 mallet grip to something f like Stephen’s.

I really love the idea of this game and how it makes percussion more accessible for everyone! I'm really impressed by the features and instruments included in this game. I love the detail of loudness depending on velocity when playing, and the different mallet types for different sounds/hardness is great too!! I also think the experimental 4 mallets is really cool as well and has a ton of potential. And the features for sheet music and a metronome included is a really nice touch. It feels very polished even though I know it is early access and more features are planned. A couple suggestions/ideas that might make it feel even better is adding physics similar to the game Vermillion. It lets you adjust the paint brush's position on your hand, and the paint brush does not go through the canvas. I think these two additions would make the mallets and the instruments feel more tactile and add to the sensation/illusion of playing an actual instrument. It would also be awesome to scale the instruments (and mallets!) and their position (like Vermillion) to increase accessibility. I feel like adjusting the location of the mallets would be cool for the 4 mallet mode to do different types of g…

I do appreciate there being a marimba app that's sophisticated enough to have sheet music importing and a metronome, HOWEVER, as a percussion player who plays many four mallet parts, trying to hold the trigger light enough to hold the correct interval is impossible. I would love at the least a way to "lock" an interval so it stays in one position. (Unless there are more four mallet settings that I'm missing?) Also, as someone else mentioned, mallet collision. Not only because it looks pretty and feels good, but it would remove the mallet going through the key and hitting other keys pretty effectively. I saw a good marimba collision effect on Grobengieser's "VRimba" and it would be incredible in this app. Otherwise, probably a good start for beginning percussionist players needing to practice without purchasing a pricey key instrument.
