Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh

not without fmv cheese but i thought the atmosphere was genuinely amazing and i love the themes of this game so much, i think it is so important. office buildings, bdsm clubs, alien dimensions and what is probably the most diabolical cut scene in existence between curtis and therese. curtis craig is a great main character and his journey is super interesting as you see him grapple with his identity and mental health. the themes of humanity verusus monstrosity and alienation is exactly my niche, i wish i played this game when i was 16. it speaks a lot to me, particularly the choice at the end between jocilyn and the threshold. also the way in which to beat the vision of his mother is to embrace her, i thought it was beautiful. also really admire the decision to have a bisexual main character in 1996 and his interactions with trevor are easily some of the best. the final puzzle is notoriously the worst and i think genuinely unsolvable without a walkthrough (also kept crashing 😭 but there is a patch!) but i'll let it slide because its legit the last 5 minutes of gameplay. for the most part i had no problem with the game and think the first chapter especially is incredibly interest…

Smoother and more polished than the original Phantasmagoria, this sequal is curiously absorbing, shifting the player from one scene to another seemlessly. While the narrative has some issues sharpening the technical side of the tale; cultivating drama, suspence, and turmoil, Phantasmagoria 2 is an uncomplicated journey through the mind of a ordinary man trying to survive a meltdown caused by the trauma of his childhood; successfully finding the answers to why his life is hopelessly messed up. Rated 7 out of 10.

After playing Phantasmagoria 1, this sequel feels like something you have to try. However, the bar set by the first game was simply too high for it to match. In my opinion, the story here is relatively weak, and the puzzles are quite easy to solve, with obvious hints scattered throughout the game. I really missed elements like the skull offering mysterious advice in a dark voice, as well as the secret passageways and the overall sense of mystery surrounding dark forces. That said, Phantasmagoria 2 does have solid gameplay mechanics, along with good video quality and performance. All things considered, it’s a decent game for its time. I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10, mostly because the story is weak and you can finish it in around three hours.
