R-Type Dimensions III

As an old r-typer, I can't recommend this port when comparing to original SNES/SFC version: Hitboxs are wrong; Force could be penetrated by stage 1 mini robots' fire while it could block the 3 way lasers in Stage 4 middle boss; Awful Sound effects, especially red laser of standard force; Item carriers appear timings are wrong; Some zakos are hard, while some bosses are as soft as tofu; updated @2026-06-21 After the patch released, I played it through again. Sudden death bug isn't fixed in stage 2 after downscroll and goes through the tunnel; Sudden death bug isn't fixed in stage 4 at the "safe point" of the second compressor before the boss; Stage 5, movement of tentacles that morphed from the terrain is too fast when comparing to the original SFC/SNES version that means it's impossable to evade from them; besides, the 3D animation of the transformation is still owful, when the boss is completely transformed into it's original form is invisible and, died if my R-9 stays in the middle of the screen; Last stage, when my R-9 stays in the "dimension hole" inside the last stage, enemy should not be spawned from the hole in the original SFC/SNES version, but enemies spawn from the hole …

This game is not for R-Type fans. I can't believe the IREM licensed this. It is not faithful to the mechanics of the original game. It doesn't use the same sounds. It "breaks" whatever muscle memory you may have of the original. It doesn't seem to offer 4:3 aspect ratio. Worse yet, it's a bit buggy. The "force" doesn't always work as a shield, and there are cosmetic issues here and there. Wait for an update, if it ever comes, and then read the reviews and see if the publisher did their homework or not.

Extremely buggy & unpolished remake. Some core game mechanics are completely broken vis-à-vis the original Super Nintendo release. Claims of accuracy fall very short. I feel duped. Problems I ran into: Some enemy types shoot bullets that consistently pass right through the Force Unit, when they didn't in the original. I felt like I was going nuts seeing it happen. Then I dug out my original cartridge. Lo and behold, the Force Unit blocks those shots. This obvious error slipped through the developers the same way. As others have mentioned, the quick charge beam no longer pierces through enemies, rendering it mostly useless. Also, when switching between 2D and 3D, graphics become misaligned from their hitboxes. Making judgement of ship spacing in the 3D mode a gamble. The screen proportions are zoomed in to fit 16:9. I think it's too close, changing the gameplay too much. Slowdown present in the original, around which the difficulty was balanced, is now completely gone. It's not as big of an issue here since this isn't a bullet hell SHMUP, but it remains a sign that the developers weren't paying attention to accuracy, or the genre and its audience as a whole. R-Type 3 was definitely by least played of the whole series. I see this has a lot of negative reviews and I can't comment on how accurate it is to the original, I was able to complete the game on classic and learn it none the less. Devs have patched some issues I had already and seem committed to making it better. Overall I had fun and game is very playable currently.

My qualms are: When you get a game over and tells you "cointinue?", it should say "continue!", also I've played it on Spanish it says "continue: si or no". Now seriously, I went through the entire game, on advanced... extreme difficulty aside, the only real issue I've found is that when an (Xbox) controller is unplugged and plugged back, you can control the pause menu but not the ship. Unplugging and plugin again does solve it, though. It's just something minor. Other than that? The game's stunning, both graphics and the music. Brutal, but gorgeous.

I'm a big R-Type fan, but have never played R-Type III before. The closest thing was the homage stage in R-Type Final 2. I have played pretty much all of the other R-Type games. There may be a few issues, but I am enjoying it. I think 1st stage is tough compared to other R-Type 1st stages, but once you work out the required patterns it is very satisfying to make progress. And the trademark R-Type addictiveness is fully intact. Regarding reported issues, I agree in general but I still really enjoying playing this, noting that I haven't got past stage 3 yet. I did fly right through on Infinity mode but that doesn't provide much insight as you can complete the whole game smashing into things the whole way. I think in 3D mode you generally have to be conscious that when the screen rotates perspective you might have to make extra adjustments to your position - which to me is just like any R-Type game - learning where to be at any given moment. Looking forward to the issues being patched all the same. There a number of 3D visual modes to choose from so if the full modernised version is too shiny you can dial it back to various retro modes - that is pretty cool.
