About Receiver

✦ AI summary

Master intricate gun mechanics—loading, jamming, and firing a detailed 1911, revolver, or Glock—as you navigate randomized levels packed with deadly automated turrets and drones while uncovering cryptic audio tapes. This experimental FPS challenges the genre with realistic weapon simulation and fragmented storytelling that makes every reload a tense, tactile experience.

Receiver was created for the 7-day FPS challenge to explore gun handling mechanics, randomized levels, and unordered storytelling. Armed only with a handgun and an audio cassette player, you must uncover the secrets of the Mindkill in a building complex infested with automated turrets and hovering shock drones.

The only reason why I give it a positive review is that I got this game for free when buying Receiver 2. Otherwise it would've been a negative one. This game is essentially a demoscene with cool weapon handling. The rest is decidedly meh. The problem is that there are only three weapons, and you are a oneshot. The weapon handling is not good enough to overcome the frustration of getting killed by a flying bot for the umpteenth time.

Nothing more than a concept demo to show off and test guns handling and animations. Although there is somewhat of a skill curve in figuring out how to handle the guns and the two enemy types. On sale it is fun for an evening.

I was excited to play through this, but there's little to no variety on weapons, enemies, and rooms. By 30 minutes you'll see everything this game has to offer. Plus, the appearance of everything except the guns is lackluster at best. The only redeeming quality about this game is the firearm handling, the main focus of this game, and in my opinion the fun will wear down before you get to operate them properly. I really, really wouldn't recommend this, not even on sale. It'll just catch dust on your library.
