About Recesses

Recesses is a single-player card game adventure where every day's outdoor break from elementary school is a new battle. Your best friend went missing, and now it's up to you to defeat all the weirdo kids she played Battaliens with at recess to find out what happened to her.

In this game, losing is good! You get to see new dialogue, try new strategies, and win or lose, you always get another booster pack of cards to strengthen your collection.

Making it all the way from Monday to the boss of the playground on Friday is no easy task, but each day's victory brings you closer to the truth. Although it may not be what you expected.

Features:
  • Over 30 original music tracks by CoZyro and Kasey Ozymy (Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass) that will make you go, "Wow! The music in this game has no right to be that good."
  • Graphics that only look like they were drawn by a fifth grader. A grown up did draw them and he tried really hard.
  • 100+ cards with unique abilities, art, combos, and flavor text.
  • Over 110,000 words of dialogue with multiple scenarios depending on your win/loss record.
  • More than 13 different elementary school opponents with their own strategies, theme songs, and surprisingly philosophical monologues.
  • At least 8 bird puns of varying quality.
  • And 1 goat.

Recesses is recommended for players age 13 and up. It contains a few instances of mild profanity.

Recent reviews/comments:
  • "Best RPG Deckbuilder I've seen in a while. Mechanically this game is what the Pokemon TCG should have been." (VLPN)
  • "This game's a lot deeper than it looks on the surface, honestly I came for the cutesy card battling and have been amazed by the quality of the writing. Now I can't stop playing it just because I want to see more of what the characters have to say." (Ferdy)
  • "I can't stress this enough; this is one of the most compelling narratives I've seen in YEARS." (supremelordender5705)
  • "Recesses is the Dark Souls of Card Games." (Dr.Garushi)

Main game playtime is approximately 15-30 hours, with hours of extra post-game challenge content. The Extended Demo is approximately 5-10 hours.

Mouse/Windows OS required for gameplay. Recesses has not been tested to play with controllers, Steam Deck, or other operating systems or hardware.

If you told me I was buying a game about elementary school recess, I’d have expected dodgeball, maybe a juice box, and some questionable decision-making. Recesses somehow delivers all of that… but with cards, existential dread, and surprisingly intense strategy instead of snacks. The heart of the game is a single-player deckbuilder/strategic card battler: every outdoor break becomes a strategic duel against another weirdo from the playground. Each card has weird, wonderful effects, and losing feels as rewarding as winning — because it unlocks new dialogue and strategies and gives you more cards to add to your collection. If you go in expecting some breezy card game, you’ll be surprised by how captivating Recesses is — 100+ unique cards, tons of goofy but sharp dialogue, and real strategic depth that sneaks up on you like someone throwing sand in your face at recess. In short: it’s kind of like if your favorite deckbuilder and your 5th grade memories had a weird art project baby, and it’s way better than it has any right to be. Bring your booster pack and your bird puns cause we are going on a wild ride.

This game is punching way above it's weight! It's a great deck builder, with a lot a varied strategy available and some very interesting mechanics. On top of that, the writing genuinely interesting. 10 hours in, I still have plenty of fun playing it. + A trove of bird based puns

I hesitated to review this game. It's engrossing and enraging and the story has intersting ideas but also doesn't make much sense if you stop and think about it There is a strong random element especially when you get to week 3 and the games forced into Draft mode, this game has roguelike rules so you lose once you'll have to go back to the start of the week and fight everyone again, the end boss of each week is cheap as hell and the story is engaging but also.. the kids don't act anything like their age and some plot points are just silly. And the week 3 epilogue ends with a fart. Try the demo, its long and has a lot of content and if it leaves you wanting more get the game

Tactically fun card game with meaningful in game decisions, paired with wonderful social commentary. Can't beat the price!

Goofy fun card game with some comentary on life and a short story about a kid trying to find an old friend. Gameplay wise its fun to build a deck fully flesh it out and learn each boss encounter as you go. Difficulty is nice without being to overbearing. Great roguelike for cheap. Cant beat it.
