Rise Of The White Sun - 白日升

The concept is great, but the game needs more work. I'll probably keep playing here and there because the time period is really interesting and the developer has clearly already put great effort into the making of this game. The game mechanics also don't seem bad at all. The reason I'm saying I wouldn't recommend buying the game is that it seems like an early access game to me. My first experiences with the game were: - Could only change music volume in-game (the music is great btw) but had to turn down volume in volume mixer anyway because effects volume was too loud. - Loaded into the tutorial and was confused for 15 minutes because I didn't know what I was supposed to do; it turned out the tutorial was bugged and restarting it loaded it normally. - UI felt confusing (not horrible but quite bad), the UI just doesn't feel like it's up to the level of a fully released game and for example after moving my army on a district it took a while to figure out where I can take control of the district, as clicking on the district wasn't the right answer but rather finding the buttong in the army actions. Reports are just a column of text that is kind of hard to read. - Couldn't figure out…

Game has some neat ideas but the game also doesn't want to tell you anything A leader is speeding up building construction? Nice! How much?... Doesn't say. That's fine, this is a military game not a building game! We attack with an army! Our army falls back. Why? Hmm... says they got hit by artillery and crumbled. Ok, we'll raise morale to full and discipline then attack! Same result, same text. What could it be? Bad luck? Maybe we need more soldiers? Maybe more artillery? Maybe more rifles? Maybe we need two armies to attack back to back? Maybe the Leader is a sucky general?? Who knows! Doesn't say. Its hard to recommend it as a strategy game when you can't form a strategy without any numbers.

This is a good game? I think? I really like the Shanghai Uprising scenario, I've played through it a few times now with the different factions, and since it's isolated to one city it's within the scope that I can understand it. However, whenever I've tried to venture beyond that, (I tried the Tibet scenario, since I thought that since it's focused on just a few provinces it would be more manageable, and the Wang Jingwei scenario, since it's literally just two people) I've been baffled by the complexity and, unfortunately, rather obtuse mechanics. I'm sure I'll get the hang of them eventually though. I'd certainly advise you to try it if you like strategy games, but only if you're prepared for a very steep learning curve for a while!

I initially bounced off the game and couldn't figure out how to play. The Shanxi tutorial stage was really helpful in finally figuring things out. ANyway, an excellent and fun game that captures the struggle of trying to control and govern just a single province in the warlord era, let alone try to reunite the whole country..
