Rolling Arcade

Let me preface my review by saying I played the actual arcade game this is based on, Zeke's Peak (Ice Cold Beer is similar), so many times that I was able to finish all 10 holes 2-3 times and roll the score over. So this game looked right up my alley. Being so good at Zeke's Peak, I found this game to be actually harder than the real thing. Rolling Arcade does have the advantage in that the ball in the arcade game would sometimes be dirty and "stick" to the rod a bit, so if stopped it wouldn't start rolling until you really angled the bar. Thankfully Rolling Arcade doesn't recreate that "feature". But the time limit to get the ball to each hole feels too short. The game could really use an "easy" mode where the time limits are doubled, or a practice level where there are fewer holes to deal with, or both, so people could get the feel of things without being overwhelmed with the difficulty. I'm happy to see there's a setting to turn down/off the music. I usually find music in games too loud or just annoying. One missing feature here is windowed mode. Must be fullscreen. Let's get this out of the way, this game if tough as nails, at least until you get the feel of the ball moving thingy. Once you got that, it gets easier, but it can still be challenging. It needs a few easier levels in the beginning, to ease the player into the game. But it is only a dollar, so if you are into arcade games like this, you can't really go wrong with it. It has a decent amount of levels and you can buy a DLC with even more levels. It's a fun game for short sessions. I also like the simple aesthetics and the music.

Much too hard for its own good. I don't see it being a game I get back often. I thought it would be cool to play on my arcade cabinet but it's just too hard to control. Even on a keyboard the game is uncontrollable. I like the concept and for a dollar it's ok to get just to try it but don't expect more than 30 minutes of trying to get somewhere. I dislike the lack of options, no monitor or graphical settings, cannot rebind your controller keys (you can use Steam's controller configuration at least), cannot play on a vertical monitor. That means the playfield is very small because of the cabinet around the game. I like the graphics and simple layout but that's it.

After playing the first few levels I can safely say that this one will test your hand-eye coordination. It's quite brutal to be honest, sometimes too much so. But it's quite tense and challenging, so if you were into arcade cabinet games, this might be for you. And for this price, you can't really go wrong.

Great idea wrapped in a badly designed game. Stupidly difficult to unlock layouts. You are given 2 balls to start, but when you lose the first ball, you lose most of the time, so the second ball just times out. Will uninstall, I want to play but it makes me angry every time.

Nice lil digital copy of Ice Cold Beer to have, includes 2 single player game modes and a 2 player VS mode. Great feeling ball physics, responsive controls, and good enough graphics. Starts with only 1 layout unlocked- complete single player levels to unlock more. Only 1 layout available in 2P VS off the bat until you do this. Steam Remote Play works very well and is how I've played multiplayer so far. For less than a dollar you really can't go wrong. Only wish it had some sort of timer/score/anything options for multiplayer but again, 99 cents.
