ROMANCE OF THE THREE KINGDOMS 8 REMAKE

Recommended with the caveat that it's relatively simple compared to ROTK XIII (the latest 'any officer' game in the series besides this one). It is also not a particularly difficult or challenging game on any difficulty setting. However, the Action Point system is generally compelling and good for encouraging strategic balance across personal and force development. It looks good, plays speedily, and the core gameplay loop of developing your character and relationships is compelling, especially if you start from the lower ranks. Weaknesses include overly long rote dialogs, the traditional shoddy translation, and a lack of balance, meaning you'll have to try very hard not to have much more Culture (one of the three reputation currencies) accumulation than anything else. I would recommend this particularly as someone's first ROTK game, especially if they were not familiar with the genre and were otherwise intimidated by the idea of a 'grand strategy' game like this.

While I enjoyed Rotk XIII far more, I love the controller support for this being on pc and hope it continues. English dub would also be great so can feel like an updated Dynasty Tactics game and some character designs in that were also grand. I don't care for how Lord Lu Bu was done as he looks insane, whereas in 13 he was just dynasty warriors-esque. The time moves odd in this game as in 13 you can do a lot in one day whereas in this everything you do costs a day. Sun Ce and Jian should both have character models as well. The tiger soldier and little conqueror of Jiangdong deserves better. The scenarios being able to flow better together would also be grand, as in 13 I would go out of my way to save officers from their historical deaths, such as Dong Bai or Lu Bu, Liu Feng or Lu Meng, Empress Dowager He Shi and Wang Yun. In this it's far easier to break historical events rather than keeping them as interactive. Take the various aspects of the games up to this point and a perfect rotk could be made, I hope to see one day that my character can join events specifically and change the outcomes like 10. [h1]Fond memories, good remake[/h1] I still have the PS2 PAL version of this game close at hand and many fond memories of playing it extensively. It was however rather dated and limited by it running on a console system rather than PC. This PC remake has a lot going for it: -It gives the same vibes when managing towns, including the small animations playing in the background. -It's improved on the rather clunky battle system. -There's a lot of added cutscenes, art and animations. -Voice acting in several languages does improve the game as well. -There's a fair bit of sidequesting, with a handy tracking function. -They vastly improved on the marriage system of yore. -Interactions have also been revamped with other officers. However, there are some less than optimal things to consider as well: -Custom officers get the generic goon appearance in debates/duels. -The game's less confusing. Not confusion free. -The tutorials pop up with a fair lot of HEY! LISTEN! energy. -There's still a very limited amount of energy per month to do things with. Storyline triggers thankfully don't cost any. -A lot of content is DLC locked. All in all it is a game worth your time …

As a single player experience this is probably the best romance of the three kingdoms, though it is not so much a remake of the original romance of the three kingdoms 8 as it is its own game following its own rules. The ability to be a ruler or general is always nice as is the turn based combat returning and the wide variety of skills and the simplified version that still requires many in game turns and action points of making relationships with other officers is a nice change from other recent tittles. I clarify that romance of the three kingdoms 8 the original is the best game of the series if for no other reason than it had multiplayer which is essential in strategy games of all kinds because you will always win against the computer eventually and once you do you can kind of just do it over and over because the computer never gets better, you never have to out think them once you know how to win. Still the best single player game in the series was romance of the three kingdoms 10 and this in my opinion just barely beats it out due to the wide amount of options available for gameplay. Pretty sure Koei forgot to disclose they used AI-generated art. Lot of the animated faces especially look like they were rendered by whatever company pushes out all the low-effort AI chatbot girlfriend apps, and I do not want that from a company charging upwards of $100 for a base game and DLC. If you're charging that much, you either pay for artist, or you hire better ones that can make it *not* look like slop. I didn't get too far into the game, but I liked the original ROTK8 which is why I was willing to dive into this despite the price. But I think I will just go back to the original, I didn't see anything here that made me feel like as if it was justified.
