Ruby Dreams: Immortal Promise

To be quite honest, the game felt kind of empty to me. I liked the music - it had that sort of charm that I believe was the best aspect about the game. The background art was aesthetically pleasing to look at, yet I do feel like the characters could have had more details added to them. The puzzles were easy and they did not take too much time figure out, but I think it could have been more fun if the puzzles were a bit more difficult to solve. There are aspects to the game that were good and that could've made the game great... however, a game does not hold much weight without a well written story and well thought out characters. The story did not feel heavy enough to create any friction. It felt like there were more holes than answers. And what would have helped the story were the characters - they each had their own differences in their personalities, but their personalities were not unique enough to assist in the story telling. They could have added more weight to the plot. I'm NOT saying the game was downright awful, cause it is not. It has the potential to be a great visual novel and has room to improve. A nice mix of regular visual novel sections getting to know the love interests for better or worse and 3D puzzle sections consisting of multiple smaller puzzles. Easily a small highlight of the game is the environments in 3D and backgrounds in 2D, which are both very detailed and beautiful to behold. The character portraits are competent and cleanly drawn, though they don’t stand out much from the crowd. With eerier tunes interlaced into the background tracks they add to the atmosphere. While they too are very in line with vampire themed music, being classical and occasionally with a dark undertone they are also competently executed. About two thirds of the game consists of the visual novel dialogue complete with choices here and there, which leaves around one third of the game to show off the 3D puzzle gameplay. There is a dream dedicated to each love interest, which are integrated really well into the story in my option. Each of these dreams consists of the same a handful of smaller puzzles with slight variations strung together, which are not overly difficult but still engaging.
