About Rusty Flesh

Rusty Flesh is a sci-fi horror puzzle platformer for the Game Boy Color where you switch gravity instead of jumping (guess you could call it a VVVVVV-like!). Explore the different areas of a derelict spaceship putting together all the pieces of its lovecraftian mistery, and enjoy its retro-futuristic aesthetics. In the near future, Earth has become a wasteland, unfit for any kind of life. Nations fell, and big tech corporations seized power. They had been getting ready for this. They built massive spaceships where a few chosen ones would travel for hundreds of years, looking for a new home. The Grampus was one of those ships... but something went wrong.

Game Boy controls and their PC mappings

  • D-pad (GB): arrow keys / WASD (PC)
  • A (GB): Z / J (PC)
  • B (GB): X / K (PC)
  • Start (GB): Enter / Space (PC)
  • Select (GB): Shift (PC)

Features

  • Explore a derelict spaceship: Something's wrong in this spaceship, and it's up to you to discover what happened. Explore the ship and find clues in a non-linear narrative.
  • Solve gravity-based puzzles: Combine your gravity switch with other mechanics to progress through Rusty Flesh's series of puzzles.
  • Fight undead abominations: The former crew members have been turned into undead monsters, and they are after you.
  • 8-bit retro gaming fun: Get back to the glorious days of 8-bit handheld gaming!
Rusty Flesh actually runs on a Game Boy Color, with all its limitations.

Great mechanics, music, theme, and story. The gravity-shifting gameplay and out-of-the-box bosses keep things fresh and engaging. It’s fun, challenging, and really makes you think to solve its puzzles. There are secrets and hidden areas to discover. You can truly feel the passion behind its design.

A neat little Game Boy metroidvania of a sort! Very short experience even for a GB game (my recorded time is how long it took me to beat it, I haven't found any secrets that there might be yet), but I can see it being very replayable.

Good GBC horror-platformer!

An unknown entity has taken over your space mothership - you awake only to find chaos and destruction. Everything and everyone has changed - find out what is going on and...escape, if you can. Imagine a mix between your favorite survival horror game franchise and your favorite space, sci-fi, horror creature feature movie franchise... spice with hints to other important concepts from diverse sci-fi genres, and you have Rusty Flesh! Rusty Flesh plays basically as a 2D platformer, featuring diverse elements such as exploration, puzzle solving, switches and triggers, computer terminals, secret rooms and teleporters. You will face different enemies with different patterns; each one having specific strategies to overcome. There are many areas to explore and there are a few bosses with different, clever patterns to overcome. Please ignore my 26 minute playing time as I have run through the entire game using a flashcart and a GBC handheld console. Recommended!
