Sam & Max Hit the Road

Stick with Monkey Island My experience with Sam and Max isn't from Poker Night at the Inventory, the comic. or even this point and click. Mine is from the single season cult classic cartoon Sam and Max Freelance police. I think thats why this and the telltale games didn't stick. No idea if the cartoon is like the comics but it was face paced, wacky, and was more of a teenage tiny toons. It was for younger audience and since cartoons were going through a renasonce in the 90s they toned back on anything really adult. Being a point and click adventure game Sam and Max move slow the jokes are more witty, sarcastic, and irreverent. While some areas and lines made me laugh I do prefer the cartoon and hgow they portrayed there. What really kills my enjoyment though is the gameplay I have beat both Monkey Island games, and Grim Fandango (though that lock puzzle at the end did require a walkthrough) and this one was bad. I'm in my mid 50s and my dad owned Sam & Max back when it was released. I am a huge Lucasarts game fan, with the Monkey Island series representing an important part of my childhood, which I have since shared with my own kids. I know about Sam & Max, I tried playing the game as a kid. I've played Poker Night at the Inventory and was involved with all the lore there, with the related games and TV shows. Having said all this, I really cannot recommend this game. While Monkey Island, Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, all remains amazingly fun and playable in 2026... I feel that Sam & Max is absolutely the weakest game. I mean, I've even played LOOM, which I kind of hated. Sam & Max Hit the Road is borderline non-sensical, with the thinnest of stories that is not well communicated. The jokes are not funny, and very few of the puzzles make any sense, and the "clues", when there are any, are ridiculously vague. Retrieving the mood ring is like a massive time-out punishment. There is no logical flow, and the solution is maddening and random. barely playable, at least on modern macbooks, which begs the question why this is even available. no tutorial or instructions on how to actually use anything in the game, including pausing, saving and quitting (which, you know, requires keys my computer literally just doesn't possess). i guess i can only assume that it once came with a manual and the new port didnt update anything??

I think if you like point and click puzzle game's it's worth it to try. Also it's pretty cheap but on sale it's like less then 3 Euros? I forgot. To be honest at some point's I did get confused and had to watch a video but I could of definitely done it if I just thought about it more. (Besides from the alligator part.) I do gotta say people say there ware major glitches acording to the negative reviews I've seen but I only saw like 5 glitches max and they waren't that major. The saving thing is F5 and not Escape is kinda bad tho.

Never played this one as a kid. I'd played Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle before. While I would say those are better games, I do think this one is pretty good as well. Not nearly as obtuse as some point and clicks, but can still be a little gritty at times. There are just a couple places where you have to really make sure you've been thorough. If you get stuck, just start trying stuff. Use items on each other, on people, on places. Remember you can just use Max on some things and you'll have to too! It was fun, but I mostly just wanted to knock it out so I can go play the other games. Worth your time if you have patience and are used to some of the quirks of these old point and clicks.
