Samurai of Hyuga Book 5

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 602: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆☆☆☆ (5/10) Oh, boy. I can confidently say this is the worst book of the series: the dreaded filler episode. I'm a bit bummed. Book 4 was the ronin's rock bottom, and I was so hoping we would finally, [i]finally[/i] move past the constant grimdark misery. But oh, no. The previous cons of the past books get stronger, while the pros have faded away. The prose remains sharp as a samurai sword, as ever, of course, and the game is longer than most. However, I loved [i]Samurai of Hyuga[/i] for its emphasis on characters and action—not just fighting, but quick pacing. And Book 5's pacing is ... not great. The game becomes more linear and bogged down by rivaling factions and minor characters. Plot points are left unanswered. The ronin remains stubbornly thick-headed. I will be reading Book 6 because I hate to leave things unfinished, but I'm a bit nervous looking at the series' future. I hope I get pleasantly surprised. I'll have to cast my vote for Book 5 continuing the line of strong entries in an already strong series. My main reason is this: the introspection of the ronin goes far, far deeper in this book than in the others, enabled by certain events that happen in the beginning. While it's true that there is a lack of major choices, I honestly think it works in the story's favor. It's a step back that was sorely needed on the ronin's part, hence the comment about the introspection. It's something that I've been waiting for since the beginning - and especially after Book 4. It's also a rewarding read if you pursue Tosh's romance (also something I have been waiting for for a long time lol) and I hope they'll keep it up in Book 6. It has its flaws - while I personally consider it more linear than the other entries, it also leaves a lot of questions unanswered (for now, at least) and occasionally distracts from the main plot. That being said, I definitely recommend Book 5 if you're a fan of the series and want to continue reading. It seems to be setting up a lot for Book 6. I tried for literally months to get through this one, but despite books 1-4 being some of my favorite narratives by far, this one was just a complete and utter miss for me. I didn't care about anything going on. I didn't care about the side characters or developments. The whole thing was just a slog to get through to where I ultimately just found myself mindlessly clicking through it. Not sure what happened here compared to the last 4, but if book 6 is anything like 5, then I very much doubt I'm going to see this to its conclusion. 1/10.

Tbh i dont know how i am feeling about this game. After playing through the series as 2 diffrent characters it is safe to say any "deviation" or "diffrence" is just flavor text. The same thing happens regardless of what you choose. Basically you, the reader and the person that makes the choices, isnt the MC, the ronin is and they are a set character. Also the ronin, as they are the MC and not the player, is problematic in and of itself. I dont know what kind of fantasy it serves but the ronin has been in a bad spot since book 2 and it needs to stop. He is always pathetic or brooding or suffering it kinda lessens the impact of things. I am almost desensitized, when something bad happens i am not at least bit surprised or i dont feel its impact. There were a few things that happened early on in this book that surprised me a bit but than the SAME EXACT THING happened 3 times over and i was done with it. There needs to be at least some input from the player about the ronin's thoughts and emotions. I as the reader should be able to choose and see the results of my choices in a CYOA game. But by the looks of it, it wont be changing seeing how the book 5 went and gone. I thought book…

This is a really fun series that focuses a lot on relationships and character development along with a steady plot. The choices mostly focus on the type of personality you want to maintain interspersed with lasting decisions that follow through the series. I would highly recommend to any fans of IF.
