It worked on me when I was horrified by all the disgusting AI slop that the developer had zero qualms shoving onto Steam. AI slop is never okay. So, it's hard to describe this as a game, the focus of the product is more like that of a mildly interactive "art" experience, there's only minor, shallow and uninteresting gameplay elements. The crux of this is to push a mediocre "experience" at gamers of the kind you would normally see in a public art gallery on amateur week. In this case I think the art galleries took out a restraining order when they saw these guys coming... AI slop is offensive to everyone, especially real artists. It's true that games can be art, of course... art is where the pinnacle of creativity, craftsmanship and expertise come together to form something greater than the sum of its parts. ScreeIn is a psychological Horror game, which released in late August for free on Steam. The game has a somewhat interesting TV feature, which allows players to travel to different stages via a TV remote. This feature was supposed to resemble an episodic structure, but it actually just works more like a gateway between a couple of short levels. The developer claims that these stages all symbolize different traumas the protagonist of the game has face throughout his life. I am glad the developer stated that on the Steam page of the game, because I couldn’t really decipher any coherent meaning of the game during my playthrough. The presentation is actually at least decent in the game with some nice effects for a smaller game. I however really struggled during my playthrough to understand what the game was trying to tell me. Things seem to mostly happen because they look nice, not because they wanted to tell an understandable story. I was for example unsure whether the use of mannequins for all characters was supposed to symbolize the arbitrariness and exchangeability of humans or whether the developer just cheapened out of using proper character models. ScreeIN is a really strange psychological horror game, and I liked how quickly it made me question what I was actually looking at. The game begins with my death and then drops me into a series of fragmented memories and constructed realities. I have to move through surreal places using a broken television as a gateway, and the whole experience feels like exploring someone's damaged memories rather than simply walking through a normal horror game. The exploration is built around environmental puzzles and strange rules that change between areas. I have to pay attention to what each place expects me to do, sometimes following a ritual and sometimes figuring out whether I am supposed to break it. I liked this because the puzzles are connected to the atmosphere instead of feeling like random obstacles. The idea of entering the television screen to reach each new area also gives the progression a memorable identity. The story is probably the strongest part for me. Each section represents some kind of trauma, memory or lie, and the further I go, the more I start understanding how the pieces connect.
