I liked the exploration and atmosphere of the game, but I did not find it "scary." What scares me in games is actually being attacked suddenly, especially when my character could die very easily. Games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Dark Souls can be scary to me. The jump scares in this game do nothing, they cannot harm you unless you scream, so that just makes them not scary. I got startled a few times, but not enough to even gasp, let alone scream. The achievement you get for screaming was the 2nd to last one I got, and I did it on purpose just to see what happened. Actually, most of my deaths were on purpose for that reason. One annoyance is that if you don't make any noise, a microphone icon will pop up in the middle of the screen until you do. So, my dog thought something was wrong because I would just grunt occasionally to make that go away. The gimmick of the game just gets kind of boring and annoying after a while. I don't scream very often during games, so it was just bothersome to have to pause just to sneeze or clear my throat so I wouldn't "die." Another annoyance is the map: to actually view the full map, you have to pause and go into a sub-menu, then open it.…

I came for the vibes and wasn't disappointed. As a lifelong horror fan since childhood (and am an 'old' man now), horror stuff just doesn't get to me. I'm always on the look out for immersive creepy stuff. I saw this game played on a few YouTube channels and I dug the look and atmosphere so I gave it a try. Definitely worth the price in my opinion IF you are into exploration style gameplay and don't mind walking sims. The VHS look along with the Unreal engine graphics work fantastic together. The sound design is great for the creep factor and atmosphere. The don't scream/make noise aspect is a fun mechanic, especially if you are one who jumps/scares easily. Finding batteries and relics gives some 'game' aspects to it and a 'goal' for people who need that, but just wandering around is great. Replay ability also seems to be done right. I made it through the night but that did NOT 100% the game. So, a great reason to jump back into the nightmare forest when I'm in the mood for a peaceful stroll through the haunted woods with my spooky friends. Just watch out for bears and rednecks.
