Sculplings

mocks creature collector tropes while also being a great creature collector roguelike. after seeing like 5 different kings & 5 different creatures with multiple heads or just multiple of them the joke does start to get a *little* stale & starts to blur into lazy territory but the game is too charming & fun to put much thought into that. i hope to see continued support for this great game.

It's good! In an age where Steam games are ignoring the TOC and hiding undeclared AI use, Sculplings gets a ton of points for claymationing all of its assets. That isn't easy, and the resulting look is super charming. Sculplings' writing is similarly endearing, if you're not the type of person that it'll drive up a wall. It's hyper casual, whimsical, irreverent, but it's got some sauce. The tree evolution line having a choice between the moves "the axe forgets" and "the tree remembers" is maybe some of the best move naming in a pokemonlike, and a lot of Sculplings' mons have interesting niches or build options. I do think the roguelike format holds Sculplings back a little bit. If you simply crank the stats of your main mon and get decent coverage, you can usually sweep. On the flipside, some player moves do not feel balanced for enemies to have. The devil king's soul contract thing that deals 999 damage with seemingly no prereqs or downsides feels monotonous to deal with---you either have to outspeed and outdamage, or you have to chip it out and revive stall.
