About Scunners Run

NOW AVAILABLE FOR MAC!

Take on the galaxy spanning Bloc in a run of tight, chunky twin-stick shooting. Only your weapons, a bunch of upgrades and your wits, will take you through the gauntlet of the Scunners Run.

Chunky, physical combat
Enemies and obstacles drift and collide, railguns beams reflect, EMP bursts disable shields and engines, weapons have secondary effects that can hurt you as much as the enemy. Discover the mini combat-sandbox and see how you can twist it for your own gain.

Customise your run
Fast, twitchy shooting against a variety of enemies that can kill you quickly. Go for more defensive upgrades if you struggle to stay alive, or load up on aggressive ones to let offence be your defence.

See how far you can get
The difficulty ramps up fast, so be prepared to die. See how far your run takes you. Did you unlock anything? Did you reach the boss...

Loosely based on the 2017 Glasgow Global Game Jam Winner "Spacewaves 2079".

Scunners Run has some potential, but makes some crippling control mistakes that need to be fixed. The cursor is sluggish, moving and accelerating behind the player's input instead of with them, disconnecting you from the game. This is a surprisingly common dev mistake on controller, but here it affects the mouse too, which is inexplicable. Sluggish aim is not ok, especially in a fast action shooter, where responsiveness is a fundamental element, not a design question. For example, let's say your move your controller aim stick from west straight to northeast. The correct behavior is for the reticle to be at precisely the same screen position as your stick position throughout that motion, from leaving when you leave, to arriving when you arrive. This connects you to the aim movement, and feels good. Bad behavior is pretty much anything else. Here, after you move, the cursor starts accelerating (already losing connection with your position), moseys around the outside of a circle (now taking a different direction/path entirely from your input movement), and finally, as it approaches the stick position you wanted to aim at and have already reached, it begins to slow down,…

Big fan of this game. The world-building, art style, game mechanics, difficulty ramp, equipment variety, all top notch. A visual feast! I've gotten myself three levels from the boss, think I have a good strategy now, but the next run could throw up all sorts of challenges. Excited to finally beat it! I couldn't recommend this game enough, and for a fiver, what's stopping you. Good to see the devs are taking feedback and balancing the game with updates and new features. Solid work :)

Great wee twin stick shooter, well worth the asking price! Played this on my Steam Deck without any issues, even though at time of writing the official Valve verification isn't there.

A bit mixed on this one. Overall, the game is fun... when it works. Often you'll get a secondary objective to (for instance) kill three enemies in a single hit when the best tool you have for that job is the shotgun, which I'm not even sure counts (as I wasn't able to complete the challenge with it.) The stealth ability also seems to be a bit buggy, as the overlay/muffled audio filter will sometimes get stuck on even after its duration has expired, and I experienced a bug which seemed to be related where all my bullets would create brief lag spikes on impact before bouncing off and dealing no damage. That being said, though: Beyond these and a few other minor issues, it's a very fun and well-balanced game, and challenging to a satisfying degree too. Each weapon has its place and is useful, even the starting weapons, and there are no consumables or supers which I found myself saving up "just in case" and never using - which I can't say even of some of my favorite games. The art style is crisp, the enemies are varied and engaging, the secondary objective mechanic adds an excellent degree of self-imposed challenge... in all, I would certainly recommend buying this game, and playing…

+Decent audio +Nice amount of particles -Messy visuals -No bindings; game suggested using gamepad but apparently I could not use my secondary weapon at all -No graphical settings -Player choice cycle is too far between -> doesn't play like a roguelike really, but a dexterity twin-stick shooter = Neutral review. However since I would not recommend such game to myself, I wouldn't do it to you either.

Developer Jamorian 5's debut game is the bones of something good. As a twin stick shooter roguelike, it's fun for about one run, maybe 2. But there's just not enough progress, no incentive to go further and some poor mechanical feedback. Unlockables should be a bit cheaper, they don't feel achievable. Some upgrades or items are just flat out better than other ones, it's not particularly balanced. Cooldown on weapons and abilities is extremely long. And the missions are very samey, not enough variety. I think for a first project it's impressive. But it needed more QA and more time on the oven.
