Serious Survivors

Serious Survivors takes the familiar arena-survival formula and injects it with the speed, aggression, and weapon handling of an old-school first-person shooter. Instead of relying primarily on automatic attacks while the player concentrates on movement, it puts shooting directly into your hands and expects you to stay mobile while enormous groups of creatures close in from every direction. The result is a straightforward but energetic action game that understands the appeal of becoming progressively more destructive during a single run. The game is developed and published by Entropy Surfers, and its independent roots are immediately apparent. Rather than building an elaborate campaign around cinematic sequences or lengthy storytelling, the experience concentrates almost entirely on combat. You enter an arena, eliminate enemies, obtain upgrades, find stronger equipment, and attempt to survive as the opposition becomes increasingly overwhelming. Serious Survivors is a really enjoyable roguelike FPS that immediately grabbed me with its ridiculous approach to survival. I start with basic equipment and then throw myself into huge crowds of enemies while trying to build an increasingly ridiculous arsenal. I liked the combination of old school shooter movement and modern roguelike progression because it gives the game a fast pace without making every run feel exactly the same. The shooting is easily the strongest part for me. I can circle strafe, jump, dodge backwards and constantly reposition while enemies are coming from all directions. I enjoyed that the game rewards movement instead of letting me sit in one place and hold the trigger. Once the enemy numbers start getting out of control, simply aiming well is not enough anymore. I also need to think about where I am moving and how I am going to escape. The perk system is where the roguelike side really comes alive. During a run I can collect upgrades that completely change how powerful my character becomes. Optimization issue: When there are a over 30 of monsters on‑screen, triggering the exploding maw‑type monster causes severe frame drops in‑game. Player inputs become unresponsive for approximately 0.5 seconds. For survival games, where over 50 monsters frequently appear simultaneously on screen, this issue heavily degrades gameplay experience.
