Set Yourself on Fire

Everything, everyone, has a purpose in life. Whether immediately clear or not, there is always a method to the madness. Set Yourself on Fire is a beautiful, stomach twistingly honest depiction of young love through the traumatized lives of Michelle and Alex, in a grounded and viscerally real world not more than ten steps away from our own. Finding meaning in their lives vicariously through each other and the small things they've now learned to appreciate in life. Unlike most of my reviews regarding games that have personally touched me and my being, I cannot say much more than that. Please, please give this short (~3 hours) visual novel a read, I truly believe that there is something in this experience that can resonate with just about anyone from any and every walk of life. Love yourself and one another, be kind. And whatever you do, do not douse that fire within you.

"Are we just wasting time?" Routine is a curse that plagues us all. We wait, and wait for a sudden shift that just won't come. We feel stuck, even when we get things done. It's like wriggling in quick sand, you're moving but you're not progressing. You're nowhere closer to getting out than you were just moments ago. Dreamless people roam these streets. Their existences about as important as a grain of sand on a beach. Fragments of the greater mass, but not relevant. Routine's not just a curse to them, but their entire life. Ever since I was young I felt this way. As though others were "hollow," that they were set to accomplish nothing in life or if they were that it'd be a regular, boring achievement—nothing unique. Yet, much like Michelle, who was I to call these people hollow? I wasn't doing anything—sure I had an active imagination and frequently indulged in writing, but I was just an observer. A grain of sand. Going through routine, hating every second. Waiting for something to change. But when change came, it was from action. Someone else getting the courage to speak to me, a complete stranger. My decision to join a group, start going to a third space. Big shake ups, sure,…

This visual novel is very heartwarming, also, it's free! Absolutely give it a try!

Great game with beautiful visuals and a great soundtrack. The story is truely heartwarming and down-to-earth, including two very relatable characters. I love the realism in speech and manners of the main characters. [spoiler] The the game leaves you confused in the end, in a good way though. It didn't need a dramatic ending, frankly i for some reason actually expected the game to end in suicide by self-immolation however i feel like i prefer this ending over that. The ending is calm. Leaving on a neutral note, the daily repetition the game mentions continuing. [/spoiler] The game is a short expirience, me as a slow reader spent 3.7 hours on it and thats including about half an hour (roughly) not even playing the game. Would recommend a read.
