Just a datapoint: This installed and launched fine for me with the default steam settings on Linux Mint. And the other reviewer who said there are only a few skirmish maps is not completely correct; there’s also a random map generator. Some of the UI and graphics stuff is decidedly dated and makes me appreciate newer games. But still, it is what it was, and that’s why I bought it rather than one of the remakes. [h2] Gameplay [/h2] It is a real-time strategy and space strategy game focused on space wars and colonization. You start the game by choosing one of three different factions. You build bases, produce spaceships, and grow stronger by colonizing new star systems. The game also features technology research and diplomacy systems, while your economy relies on several different types of resources. [h2] Graphics [/h2] The graphics are good for the release year. However, the spaceships and bases are very small and look very bad when you zoom in. [h2] Audio [/h2] The sound effects are good. I played with the music off. You can hear sounds like lasers firing when you zoom in close to the spaceships. [h2] Story [/h2] There is no specific story in the game. You simply pick one of the three factions and play in skirmish mode. [h2] Difficulty [/h2] The game's difficulty changes depending on the faction you choose, the map, and the AI difficulty level. There are about 5 or 6 different AI difficulties in the game.1 found this helpful
I used to beat this and other stardock games on the hardest difficulties. Now the "FIXED" it and as soon as you start to win it turns on AI cheating to keep you from winning. Even on normal mode. Even if you take 3/4 of the planets and have tones of money and resources, it still overwhelms you. Even if everything on a planet is 100% upgraded and 100% tech tree finished with everything done that is possible the AI will still stomp you. Just give up now. The game devs ruined this game! Stardock has done this will all the old classics! I will never buy their games again!1 found this helpful
This is my timewaster with a little just a tiny bit of thought required. I have been playing it for years. Cheaper than a therapist.
