About Sol 0: Mars Colonization
✦ AI summary
Build humanity's first thriving Martian colony from scratch by managing resources, harvesting water and minerals, and constructing habitats while battling dust storms and meteorite impacts. This hard sci-fi RTS uses near-future technology to challenge you with realistic logistics—balancing oxygen, food, energy, and supplies across diverse Martian landscapes with randomly generated maps and a built-in map editor.
Sol 0 is a real time strategy game where you establish the first Martian colony. From the first human footprints on Martian soil to a thriving and self-sustaining colony, Sol 0 imagines a near future using technology that could be available within the next few decades. Make use of minerals and resources across the Martian surface to expand from the first exploratory rover to an independent frontier.
From Chondrite Games, Sol 0 gives players the ultimate chance to take on the challenges inherent in pushing the boundaries of space exploration and habitation. Grow food, extract water, build habitats, generate electricity, evade unpredictable Martian weather, mine natural resources, and construct increasingly complex and sophisticated colony bases.
You’ll be faced with balancing food and water needs, oxygen and energy supplies, natural resource collection, and preparing for weather disasters including meteorite impacts and dust storms. Prioritize the supplies you bring to ensure your colony’s survival.
The technology featured in Sol 0 is inspired by concepts currently being developed and deployed for Martian exploration. From water and mineral extractors, rovers with fine-tuned instruments, and biology labs that cross-breed bacterial strains from Earth’s extreme environments to increase food production on Mars, the available tools reflect an ever closer reality.
Ice caps, lava plains, and arid equatorial regions each offer distinct challenges to success, and randomly generated maps provide extended playability. Build custom maps using the Sol 0 Map Editor, and share your creations with other players.

This game has a TONS of flaws, and I mean a ridiculous amount of them, but I like it. It forces you to manage your economy and supplies well, because if you don't, you're boned and need to completely start over. Is it fun? Yeah, it's hilarious, I love it. Is it good? Nope. I'd say it's incomplete, and it seems like it will stay that way since the developer said they lost the source code. Do I recommend it? Sure, if you're nuts, have a sense of humor, and ~$4 to burn. Otherwise, absolutely not. Pro Tip: Your rovers/drills can clip through terrain via spam clicking to get more resources. You can thank me later.5 found this helpful
I really like the whole go to Mas and build a colony game genre. Because of this, i wanted to like this game too. But, i'm dissapointed. The base mechanics are there to make it work, but somehow it does not. Colonists die too easily, for example just a bit of air leak and half of the base is dead, even though it only affected 1 small section The base building need too much micromanagement. You can only attach new buildings to existing ones, and to the correct intersections, and when you build something, you have to manually open it's doors, so oxygen and colonists can flow. Similarly, you have to manually close these in case of an air leak. The game can be grindy, and to achieve the goals, well you just have to spam the same 3 buildings, so it is not that deep. And you have to wait a lot. A lot. Becausye every production is slow and how much you can build is really limited. Also disaster mechanics are terrible. No way to protect yourself, but one random hurricane can just wipe out your whole base. I like this game. Sometimes tough, but generally good.
The tutorial tells you to place a few buildings, but doesn't teach you to play the game. Food runs out and your people die within seconds of exiting the landing module so you have to be quick building your base. Storms and solar events will destroy your equipment and kill your people, no explanation as to how to make them go inside or protect the equipment. Overall the game feels more like a proof of concept than a complete game.
The framework for a great game exists but there are just far too many frustrating quirks: (1) not being able to automate miners, (2) mining resources seems buggy or the graphic representation is inaccurate i.e. high color indicator but miner does not recognize this (3) code breaks related to placing facilities along the edge of the map i.e. astronauts cannot repair (4) mini game for Biology Lab genetic mixing is a waste as there is not enough information to figure this out without trial and error. This should be included in the tutorial. Currently if you use up your strains there appears to be no way to resupply them meaning you are stuck for the remainder of the game with whatever level you achieved with the combination you applied. Took trial and error to discover the final strain is applied at the farmer not in the lab. (5). Refinery upgrades do improve efficiency but why is there no way to upgrade the miner to dig for deeper deposits where graphic representation of mineral shows residual amounts left. (6). Why doesn't the Biology Lab have an upgrade to tackle a cure for blight? (7). Astronauts sleep inside so why can't they route through the station for repairs when not car…
Since the game is no longer being developed or supported at this time, i can't recommend it. But, at $4 currently, it might be worth wasting a few bucks & couple of hours on. I lost interest in it after only playing for 17 hours.
