A short and quickly paced JRPG that has a lot of heart, and a lot of energy. Overall, Soma Spirits is a pretty standard framework: a collection of stock level themes and a story revolving around collecting some plot coupons to save the world. Helping it out however is the omnipresent split between the World of Joy and the World of Sorrow, which runs through both the narrative and the gameplay itself, and provides enough of a backbone to make the ~5 hour runtime entertaining while also giving it a little replay value and player choice on the side. The story here is light and largely comedic, as you may expect, but the writing is overall of a decent quality, and enjoyable. The most notable aspect is that it delivers a pretty nice message about how both positive and negative emotions are a necessary part of life, that trying to do away with all the sadness in the world or drowning yourself in grief and misery are both self-destructive ways to live- a kind of lesson you don't see a lot of these kinds of lighthearted games attempting to approach. Soma Spirits: Rebalance is a compact role-playing adventure that combines traditional turn-based mechanics with an unusual story built around emotional opposites. Developed and published by Torch60, it takes place in Soma, a land divided into two parallel realities following a devastating conflict. One represents Joy while the other embodies Sorrow, and traveling between them becomes much more than a visual gimmick. The idea influences exploration, characters, combat, music, and the decisions that ultimately determine how the story concludes. The adventure follows Heart and Soul, two guardian spirits tasked with watching over the fractured world. Their journey gradually reveals what happened to Soma and why its inhabitants have become trapped between emotional extremes. The writing frequently maintains a playful and colorful personality, but the underlying themes are surprisingly thoughtful. Rather than simply presenting happiness as good and sadness as bad, the story examines how either emotion can become unhealthy when taken too far. A really, really fun time! I can't wait to play the sequel. The story was fantastic, even if it was short, it managed to keep me engaged and it made me care about the characters, which were well fleshed out. Music was almost all bangers, and gameplay was innovative and fun! I'd definitely give it a try.

I loved the characters and the story. Combat was pretty good, and it was nice that a lot of encounters were skippable for those times when I didn't feel like fighting a battle. Switching between the two worlds was a really neat twist. It definitely made combat a lot more interesting.

A lovely little RPG Maker excursion with a cool "duality" theme. The swapping mechanic makes traversing the overworld into a fun and amusing puzzle adventure, and the combat was surprisingly complex, as most of your abilities require a bit of setup and support, and vary depending on which universe you're currently traveling in. It's nice playing an RPG that requires a little more thought and effort than the usual ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK, HEAL WHEN LOW, ATTACK, WIN. The story elements were fun and light-hearted, enjoyable for All Ages but with a story that will appeal across the board all the same. Playing through the main story took me about 7 hours, and has me curious about the New Game + feature as well as trying out the alternate endings. Definitely recommended!
